Realtors please come in

SO and I are looking for a rental house and my dad is a realtor so he has been helping us.  However, dad is swamped with being a realtor/appraiser/arbitrator (you know, actually making the money) and doesn't have a lot of time to drive an hour away from my parents area to help us see houses in the evenings (for free) after SO gets off work, and my schedule is weird because I work in retail.  Anyway, dad says that because SO is a licensed TX attorney he also can call to get lockbox codes etc, since he can write the contract, and that way we don't have to wait around on dear ole dad to have time to help us.  Have you heard of this?

  • Technically yes, but actually no.  Most lock boxes don't have codes.  They are opened by computer.  The only way to get the "supra key" is to join TREC and HAR.  The costs of the key rental, dues and fees are way more than the 1/2 of 1 months rent (before taxes, and all offices need a tax id # in order to cut a check) that he would make doing it himself.  If the Realtor has to go out there and open the door for you, they aren't going to pay him the full fee...  If the house is on combo, my office won't give the code to anyone without a MLS membership.  They need to know for sure that the person calling just doesn't say "oh yeah, I'm a lawyer".  We need to be able to find a vaid license number online before that information is shared.  They also have to have registered finger prints.  Probably more trouble than it's worth.

If you're looking in Spring Branch I have 3 houses.  1 now and 2 coming up next month.

  • You actually were the first person to come to mind.  I'm sending you a PM.
