So I'm throwing the hubs a surprise 30th birthday party at PJ Whelihan's in Blue Bell in November. We're looking at 40-50 people. I'm good on food, invitations, cake, decorations. I need some advice on two things:
1) Favors: I really want to do custom beer koozies. Has anyone done this before? What's a good website to get them from? I seem to remember someone else doing these at some point for something.
2) Activities/games/etc. We just did a big slideshow for our wedding two years ago so I'm kind of "meh" about showing one. I know I can do a MyPublisher/Shutterfly book easily for use as a guestbook/memory book. Other ideas? Are games a stupid idea? Should I just let everyone mingle for four hours and call it a day?
Thanks in advance, ladies.
Re: 30th birthday party ideas
Agreed with pp. Slideshow - yes. Games and favors - no.
The only exception to games would be if you are having a house party and there are games like beer pong and flip cup, as 30th bday parties are an excuse to act like a teenager again as far as I'm concerned. But since you're having it out, nix the games.
I'm not a fan of the slide show or the games. For my DH's 30th I made a photo book of his life from birth to current date (obviously with his mom's help). At his party someone asked if they could see it and it ended up being passed around. That was kind of fun because people in the pictures were laughing/reminising about what was happening in them. Thats the extent of anything I did.
Although we did have games of beer pong and flip cup but it was also in my backyard.
My little nuggets
I loathe games at showers, but I was pleasantly surprised when the mr planned a huge scavenger hunt for my surprise 30th bday a few years back. My first response (after getting over the surprise of the party) was sheer anxiety when he said, "now, there's a scavenger hunt!"
I'm pretty sure that he included the scavenger hunt info on the invite. Everyone (sans my parents and some of my aunts and uncles) took part--even my boss and her husband had a blast with the mr's high school friends! We got some GREAT photos from the night.
this makes me think of when steven and janet got married on 90210 and i love it.
Yeah, ditto the others - I think food, booze, music (are you having music - like a CD player, or something?) would be totally enough. I had somewhat of an "activity" at my DH's party but it was something that only took 2 minutes. Since he's a pharmacist, I had "Hello my name is" stickers and when people arrived, I had them fill it out with their Dr. name. They then had to write a prescription for him. It was hilarious to see the answers - which were mostly hard narcotics, psych meds, and some medical marijuana. I honestly have no clue how I came up with this, but if you could come up with something fun like that, something memorable, then that could be fun as long as it doesn't stop the party and/or make people feel like they have to participate.
I also had everyone sign a big 30 poster from Party City which we now have hung in a closet.
