Re: XP: book recs

  • Alice in Wonderland. I loved that book so much at that age. I think I read it about six times during my teen years.

Also, there is an amazing young adult book I read earlier this year called Anna and the French Kiss. Best book I've read all year. Amazon says it's grade 9 and up.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

I saw a review for Anna and the French Kiss on Stories and Sweeties earlier and I think I've bookmarked it.

I'm certain she's read alice in wonderland, but I definitely need to reread it!

    Little Women

    twilight

    Harry Potter

    Anne of Green Gables

I know she did not enjoy twilight (she's not a fan of girl-protagonist-as-victim stories.

She's read Harry Potter...not sure about the other two. I will check. Thanks!

and DUDE I loved Little Women. And Anne of Green Gables.

  • I loved the Babysitters' Club but I don't think those are around anymore. AoGG series (there are 8 books) of course. Also the Pat series and L.M. Montgomery's short stories are great. I liked Nancy Drew books at that age, too. I actually liked the Philip Pullman series about a female detective in the Victorian Era (Ruby in the Stone?). They're not the Golden Compass ones. I'm not sure if you could find them now though.

I love Philip  Pullman, but they're not allowed to read them because he's SO anti-church.

  • The Princess Bride. I hear the book is excellent, some say better than the movie.

I'm a little hesitant to recommend these for a 13-year-old but they're considered "young adult." First is The Book Thief, which I've read and found to be a really cool, beautiful book but very depressing. The second is Thirteen Reasons Why, which I haven't read yet but it's been on my list for a while and was highly recommended by a friend whose taste in books is similar to mine.

I've been thinking Iately that I need to reread it too. And can you believe I've never read Little Women? It's my mother's freaking favorite book and I've never read it. I also loved Jane Eyre as a teen, though 13 might be too young for that patience/language-wise.

There's Fever 1793 too. Oh, and the Shiver, Linger, Forever books (teen werewolf story) were pretty good too.

  • The unabridged version of Little Women is very good. I read the abridged as a child (about 9 yrs old) and then the full version in college. I think it might be a little difficult to read at 13 but the abridged might be a little unfulfilling at 13. I guess it would depend on your reading abilities. Another I'm remembering liking a lot at about that age was Daddy Long Legs.
