Potty Training....

So...DD turned 18 months this weekend. Scary how fast that went! She will be moving up to the toddler room at daycare next week and they asked me about potty training. I honestly hadn't even thought about potty training yet. When did/will you start potty training. Did you buy a little potty? Steps/Insert for regular potty? Thoughts? Advice? I'm not going to be potty training anytime soon... But just trying to plan ahead.

Re: Potty Training....

  • I bought a cushy seat for the big potty also a stool so his feet wouldn't dangle when he sat down. I didn't want to do a potty I had to clean all the time just to have to transition to the big potty again.  I must say having daycare doing most of the work was great!! we just followed what they did at school and it worked like a charm. DS school did mini marshmallows 1 for pee and 2 for poop. DS loved it worked better then anything else we used.

  • I introduced the potty around 2 and he would go here and there, but A wasn't really ready until he hit 3.  The day after his 3rd b-day it was like a switch in his head went off and within 2 days was completely potty trained (both day & night).  They say that girls train faster than boys though.

I used a seat for the potty & a stepstool for the same reasons as pp.  I did a reward/sticker system with a chart and it worked really well for A.  I also didn't use pullups, I went straight from diapers to underwear.  The key I found was to find whatever motivated A & leverage that.  For us it was prizes & stickers.  Some kids like candy, others like money. You'll find what works for you.

    Good luck!!

  • i did not want to clean a separate potty, did not want to teach her to use a potty anywhere (like her room or in front of the tv), and did not want to travel with it...so we bought a cushy insert when daycare told us she was ready to learn. this way, we did it at the same time and it was reinforced wherever she was.

my parents and ILs also bought inserts to keep in their homes for her.

you just have to take them often - and keep reminding them. and whoop it up when they get it right! we gave 2-3 m&m's at home, but daycare made her a little chart and the teacher got her a disney store tinkerbell lunch kit thingy when she filled it. it was very special to her. i guess mom and dad give lots of things - a teacher gift was totally unexpected and unique!

i think she was around 2 when we started. also, daycare does it as a group - all your little buddies come with you, you watch them, they watch you - it's very exciting to them - lol!

  • I had no plans to start potty training until A was at least 2....but probably closer to 3. My friends that have older kids all told me there kids weren't really ready until they were closer to 3 so I've kind of just had that in my head, but I'm hearing more and more lately of people starting much earlier (18 mos-2yrs old).

  • I think 18 months is far too early for most kids. Don't let them pressure you because pushing them into it too early can backfire. DS is almost 21 months and is just starting to show signs that he may be ready so, we got a potty and will start introducing it this week. Believe me, I would love for him to be PT'd before baby #2 arrives to cut down on diaper costs but, am also realistic that it's not likely and that I need to take things at his pace, not mine.

  • Yah I was thinking more around 20-24 months I would think about starting. I'm hoping to skip the little potty and just get her on the big potty. I must have made of face when the teacher said potty training because right after she said it she was like "When she's ready" I'm not even not even sure what the signs of being ready are!!!

  • Around 18 months my mom bought A a 3-in-1 potty. Its a regular small potty, the seat comes off and fits on the regular toilet, and closing the potty turns in into a stool.

We have kept it in our downstairs bathroom since then. He would come in sit on it with his clothes on, play with it, etc.  Within the last 3 months he will randomly come in and ask to take his clothes and diaper off and sit on it while one of us may be in there. He is sitting for longer periods of time and Ive tried to explain to him that "pee pee goes in the potty"

Thats where we are at and A just turned 2 last month.  It doesnt hurt to have something as a starting point so she gets the concept of going potty!

Im not really sure where Im going to go from here, maybe a few more months and I will hard core try to potty train, we will see! GL

  • at our 18 mo appt with the ped- they gave us a sheet on potty training. it suggested to buy a potty at 18 mo and have it in the house so they would know what it is and think it's cool so when they are ready to use it they will.  so we bought the sit on the floor kind of potty.  DD thought it was cool and was using it within a week.  she went about 6 times.  we made a sticker chart and gave her some kind of 'treat' each time.  those 6 x were stretched out over 4 months.  it was like the thought would pop in her head and she wanted to go.  mostly she just wanted to come sit on her potty when we sat on ours.  the last time she went potty was the day before her 2nd birthday.  it was like something dawned on her "hmm, easier to pee in my diaper" and she completely lost interest.  fast forward to about 25 months, we're at a friends house and she is very interested in her dora (on top of the seat style) potty.  so i buy one.  (actually from pampers rewards.)  she wants to sit on it all the time, but refuses to go on it.  so we're pretty much at a stalemate now.  i guess she'll go when she is ready.  i think you might have more luck though, they say daycare kids and kids with older siblings usually want to do it sooner b/c they see other kids doing it.  good luck!
