Offer letter question/advice

I've received a written offer letter today and the dollar amount of my base salary is what we agreed upon verbally.

However, in my interviews I was told that there is also "potential" for an annual bonus that is not mentioned in the offer letter. In the offer letter there is no mention of eligibility for the bonus. Understanding it's not a set $ amount, or even % of base pay,I was considering asking for a revised letter with an added something like :

?You may also be eligible to receive an annual bonus in addition to your base salary. Such amount, if granted, is at the discretion of senior management.?

Not sure what this gets me, but I find it odd that it was left out totally. Any advice? Thanks

Re: Offer letter question/advice

  • hmm... I'm not sure a bonus is typically mentioned in an offer letter, but it seems like poor form to ask them to include your wording in their offer. Perhaps you could call the person who extended the offer and politely ask about it. Not sure how I would word the question though. You don't want to appear greedy.
  • I would probably call and ask about it.  Something along the lines of "Hey we talked about the potential of a bonus during our conversation.  I don't see it mentioned in the offer letter I received.  Can you please clarify the bonus structure for me?"

My offer letter from my current company indicated that in my position I was eligible for the bonus program with a bonus target of xx% of my salary.  So I understand you wanting something in writing...that you're eligible for the bonus.  Not necessarily that you're getting it or what the amount is, but just that you're eligible for it.

  • Thanks- I went back and  asked for verbal confirmation of the bonus potential, and whether it was standard to include in the offer or not and they confirmed they generally don't, but that if I was uncomfortable they would revise the letter. I decided to leave it as is.

Good point about not asking to use my words in their letter- occupational hazard I guess. I spend a lot of time editing documents and correspondence!
