help

Dh's gma just died (like an hour ago). I don't know what to do for him or his family (his mom is destroyed). I have never been in this situation before. I'm 23 and have only been to 1 funeral (the father of my dad's business partner). I haven't talked to C yet (he is at work) so I have no idea what he is feeling or thinking. But what should I do? SHould i leave him alone when he gets home? Act normal? get flowers? send his mom flowers? The funeral will be in Redwood City so I will obviously need to get the time off work but aside from that what can I do?

Re: help

  • Cook dinner (or order in), and have some nice wine for him, and let him lead on how to handle it. He may want to talk, he may not talk...just let him lead. You could send your MIL flowers too, but I would only do that if it is in the budget.
  • I'm so sorry for your DH's loss.

Just be there for him.  Don't pretend like nothing happened.  Give him a hug and ask him how he's doing.

If you're close with MIL, give her a call.  Just say you're so sorry and wanted to see how she's holding up.  People appreciate the thought and she'll talk if she wants to.  Maybe ask if there's anything you could help her with--phone calls to make, arrangements you can help with, etc.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

    This is great advice.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

Ditto everything here.  I think these are great suggestions.  I would probably save flowers for the service if you are going to send them, or maybe a plant?

So sorry for your family's loss.

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. DH seems fine. We knew it was coming and we had luckily just been in the bay area to see her so he doesn't have any guilt over not visiting her toward the end. I will definitely bring flowers to the service and I am sure I will make things for the wake.

I know she is watching over her great granddaughter now I just feel so badly for his family.

    Thanks again
