Friend get togethers for the Holidays?

What do you do with your friends to celebrate the Christmas season?  Im trying to come up with something that is casual but not just sitting at home watching Christmas movies together (our friends hate Christmas movies-crazy huh?).  Ideas?

Re: Friend get togethers for the Holidays?

  • Would they hate caroling or looking at Christmas lights ?
  • DH wouldnt go for the caroling, Christmas lights would be nice :)  Thanks.
  • One of our friends always has a Christmas party. We play party games, like Apples to Apples and Dirty Minds. It really has nothing to do with Christmas.

  • My two best friends and I go to dinner then back to someone's house to write our Christmas cards.  We usually have a bottle (or two) of wine and sometimes have a Christmas movie playing.  It just depends on which house we go to.

H and his old fraternity buddies get together the same night/weekend and go bar hopping.  It's getting a little old (and so are they) so I've been trying to think of co-ed things to do as well.

Sometimes it's nice just to get everyone together at a restaurant that allows for large groups and has a bar in case anyone wants to show up early and hang out before dinner....

  • we usually do a get together with the white elephant present swap thing. but, that only works for a big crowd, imo.

i also get together with a smaller group and do baking- cookies, fudge, etc.

i think it would be really fun to make a bunch of different christmas candy and decorate together. like, fudge, cookies, peanut butter balls, etc.

  • How about a holiday cookie exchange? Everyone makes a batch of holiday-themed (or just plain delicious) cookies and you all take home a little bit of each kind. Maybe you can order in and have dinner before you unveil the cookies.

  • DH and I started hosting a Christmas party last year. We draw names for a Christmas exchange at our annual party the day after Thanksgiving. Then we played a Christmas quiz and I gave out prizes. We had yummy food, and hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. This year my theme is candy cane Christmas, so I have a few games to play with candy canes. We put Christmas movies on all of the tvs and some people sit and watch, but mainly we all just hang out and have a good time.

  • You can do a pot luck. We cook because we love cooking and to cook for others. Maybe a fondue party, we had one years ago and everyone enjoyed that.

A gift exchange/secret santa type of thing?

Since the holidays get crazy, for our larger group of friends we go out to our favorite restaurant as a large group and enjoy a night out together.

  • In high school my mom would always have a brunch right before Christmas for my friends.  After we graduated high school, she continued to host them until I had my own place.  We've been doing this brunch for more than 10 years so it has been nice to have a tradition to look forward to to catch up.  We use to do a secret santa.
  • Our neighbors just have a holiday open house the weekend after New Year's.  It's a lot of fun b/c everyone is relaxed at that time, not stressed and thinking of all they have to do.  The hosue is still decorated in a Christmas-y way.

Do you have a fireplace?  If yes, maybe make s'mores?  If not, maybe fondue?  I also like the cookie exchange (not sure if that is great for a co-ed party).  Maybe decorate a gingerbread house or decorate cookies for people to take home with them?

  • We always get together and have a nice dinner and then exchange gifts. It's a potluck which makes it easy and fun.

  • We have dress up Christmas parties.  At Easter we have nice dress up dinners with tons of wine.

  • We host a holiday party the Saturday night before Christmas. Aside from the decorations and music, it is more of a get together. Everyone brings an appetizer or dessert to share, and we provide more food and the alcohol. Last year, we did Captain Morgan with spice cider and it was a hit! When we were younger, it used to get pretty wild, but we have calmed down now that we are in our 30's :-)
