I can't believe your in PM too. If I get to finish this degree I get hours towards my PMP. I was an IT Headhunter for a Chicago firm before we moved here. There aren't nearly enough PMs who understand that PM is very different than General Management. My husband has his Marter's in Information Systems Management. He sat for the CAPM, but hated the test since he didn't do a prep course and had no idea what he was getting into. I'm eligible for it, but don't want the certification until I start working again. I can totally empathize with missing Chicago. I spent a lot of time in the area with friends and for work. It really is an amazing city!
Re: Nique!
We have a lot in common, my husband is in IT also. I totally agree, being a PM is nothing like general management. Although it is a lot of "babysitting" at least in my company it was.
It has been a very hard adjustment moving here from Chicago, especially since I work from home, so I left Chicago and moved here knowing no one but my husband and his family and I sit at home all day in my office. It has made the adjustment harder than I think it would have been if I went in to an actual office everyday and worked with other people.
I miss so much about Chicago, summer street festivals, the FOOD ( I use to have just about any type of food, german, sushi, etc. within a 2-3 block radius of my apartment)
But I don't miss the cost of living there or the traffic.
It is nice to "meet" someone that I have so many things in common with.
It really is nice to meet someone who has a similar view of things. My Manager wanted to homeshore me here because I was so productive and good at landing top tier candidates, but they said they would have had to open the option to everyone and couldn't due to my lack of seniority. I had only been there a year and was the only productive one in a small office. They had 8 other branches. Now I just work on graduate degrees and plot our move to a big city when my husband works off his tuition reimbursement. They paid 100% on his Master's and require 2 years to pay it off. I just can't get used to people looking down on women with education which this county is notorious for doing. I have been told by several people that I didn't land this or that job because I was more qualified than the interviewer. I think that's why I have huge adjustment issues here. We have no social life.
Before we moved here, we had a house 8 blocks from Lake Michigan in St. Joe, MI where the Chicago crowd vacations. It was local, organic, fine dining everywhere and a gluten allergy was never an issue with the Chefs. We had awesome liquor stores, fun little shops, art exhibits, and a different festival to walk to every weekend. It was great! The we lived in a 1500 sq ft loft with 20 foot ceilings and water views from every window in South Bend. We were walking distance from every ethnic market, the concert hall, the bars, and tons of different types of food. It was festivals all summer and tailgating in the fall. It's a fun city since it's in the middle of Chicago and Detroit and picks up vibes from both places. The South Shore was an easy way into the city for shopping and hanging out. Cost of living was really low for the place we had too. Our last night there we walked to dinner at a wine bar and caught The Black Crowes in a 100 year old auditorium. It was amazing!
There's a couple of good restaurants south of you in Columbus that are more American Fare, but have great wine lists and CIA Chefs. There's also a Tapas bar there and an amazing Italian place that I can no longer have, but they make their pasta from scratch and have things like pine nut crusted goat cheese.
Ditto!
