it took 29 weeks...

for someone to make a pregnancy comment that made me give the side eye.

This guy I work with who is kind of my psuedo-manager walked into my cube and goes "oh hey Chubby.  I mean Kara" and laughed at his "joke" and said he had to do it "just once".  In my normal emotional state I probably would have just laughed, but I was just said "um hi".

Offended isn't the right word because I'm not, but more just caught off guard?  There are probably 3 people in my life who could get away with saying that to me without me getting annoyed and he is not one of them!  It's not like we're close or anything!

Plus I'm just in a sensitive mood today so I want to go home and eat oreos.

Boo.

  • NoHello HR.  Comments like that... joking or not... have no business being made in the workplace, IMO. It's a good thing you don't suffer from an outright eating disorder- I feel a comment like that could send someone into a downward spiral.

  • My boss said something like that to me at one point when I really pregnant. I just gave him "the look," he came over an apologized later. But I agree with Brit, comments like that do not belong in the work place. I always wonder why people think it is ok, because you are pregnant, to make rude comments.

  • I think if my boss said that to me I'd cry right then.

Calling my cat tubby, that's funny. To a person, no.

  • Wow, that was a rude comment.  The funny thing is if you had called him out on that he would have probably said something stereotypical about hormonal and pregnancy.

We went to a Brewer's game a few weeks ago and an older gentleman didn't know how to ask if I was expecting (it's pretty obvious that I am though) and he asked me: "so, um, are you nesting?" and then pointed to my belly.  I said I was and then he went on to ask me how I was feeling, etc.  He was a really nice guy so I just had to chuckle at the way he asked.  As we were leaving he wished Matt and I luck.

  • P.S. I didn't realize you were 29 weeks (even though I read your update every week). When did that happen?!

  • Jules - I've had people do similar with me, they want to ask but aren't sure how without thinking they're being rude.  I like those people.

Holly - yeah, i know.  I have no idea how I got to 29 weeks.  Time is flying!!

Claire - boo them.  It must be stupid coworker day.

  • Yeah, that's not ok. It's never ok to say something like in the workplace so I don't understand why anyone would think it would be acceptable when someone is pregnant. I'm sorry you ladies are dealing with stupid people.

  • Goodness gracious have people lost all common sense. 1st of all agreed that it is not a cool comment to be making in the workplace (or really at all) but 2ndly making comments like that to a pregnant woman who may be in the midst of a hormone surge could get you hurt.

  • oh I'm not bothering HR with this - he really didn't mean anything by it.  It was mostly just awkward and we're not really close enough that I'd think he'd make a comment like that, even though he was joking around.  If I in anyway thought his intent was malicious I'd say something, but I know it wasn't - he's a really nice guy, just a little clueless apparently.
