UPDATE: Anyone have their child tested for Type 1 diabetes?

We are doing this tomorrow and I have no idea what to expect. Any words of wisdom?

Thanks so much for all the supportive comments. We really appreciate it!

We went to the pedi this morning and tried to get a urine sample. It didn't work so blood work will be next. She did a lot of poking and prodding and said that he would have kidney pain. He does sometimes complain that his tummy hurts. That + insatiable thirst + super frequent urination + hypoglycemic type behavior = the feeling that the blood draw will be necessary but lack of kidney pain and whatever other poking she did made the pedi very optimistic that he is just kind of a thirsty kid.

DH and I leave for NOLA in the morning so the blood tests will have to wait until Monday. Pedi is more than fine with this since he is not showing any emergency type symptoms.

Thanks again!

  • Are they doing the fasting test?  My nephew has had it done twice, due to his climbing a1c numbers.

They didn't tell us to fast, so I am guessing not.

  • They are probably going to pull a blood sample to measure his a1c level, which gives them an average blood sugar level for the last 2-3 months.  Caleb gets his tested every 4-6 months.  Depending on his results, he has had to do the fasting test.

Caleb has been considered pre-diabetic for the last 2 years, because of his a1c levels.  It's often a complication of CF.

    Good luck!

  • Don't have any words of wisdom.  I'm assuming there has been some symptoms for you to test, but I hope you do get good news.

If you do get a diagnosis, let me know if I can be of some help.  We have diabetes/endocrinology physicians in my clinic at TCH.  I can get you some info and some books for kids that helps to explain things on their level.

  • My niece was recently diagnosed Type I. Just FYI if he is diagnosed you're most likely looking at least several days to a week in the hospital. I really really hope his tests come back negative and you don't have to worry about that but thought I'd warn you. Also, if you have questions I can put you in touch with my sister. Hugs and good thoughts for M.
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • My sister also has and endocrinologist through UT that she really likes.  I hop eyou don't need it, but if you do I can get the name for you.

  • Oh no.  Good luck today.

Did he have any "symptoms"?  Or what made them want to test?  Diabetes runs in my family and although I never tested +, I would like to know if there's anything to look out for in Georgia.

  • Good luck today!!

  • My nephew was just diagnosed last week and was released from the hospital earlier this week.

I will keep you in my prayers and hope for a negative test result.

Pook - the symptoms of my nephew:  extreme thirst (was brushed off at first by my SIL b/c it had been 100+ degrees everyday so she thought it was the heat that was making him thirsty), hungry, fatigued, headaches, and the most telling sign was bed wetting (nephew is 8 y.o. and started wetting his bed 3+ times a night).  When nephew got to the pedi, his blood sugar was over 500 and he was sent immediately to Children's where he spent 6 days.  We have zero history of diabetes in our family so we had no idea what the symptoms were and what to look for.  I know these symptoms would be difficult to notice in an infant pook but just something to keep your eye out for in the future.

  • I have no information but I am wishing you guys the best.  Hang in there Momma.
  • I have a step brother (now 20) who was diagnosed around 7 or 8yo with type 1. I didnt meet him until he was 15 so I don't have much advice about the beginning phases but I can say that it is crucial to have them take care of themselves (kind of a "duh" thing but still). He drinks, smokes, does drugs and he is deteriorating rapidly Sad I doubt he will make it to his 30th bday.

I hope your sons tests come back negative. Sending positive thoughts your way!

  • Hoping for the best, V. I'll be thinking of you guys today.
  • Lots of prayers for you and little one.

One of my best friends has Type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed around the age of 7 or 8. Hers is well managed and she has always said her diabetes never impacted her ability to have a fun and happy childhood.

  • My Aunt didn't get to test her daughter for it (my cousin was 8-9), Hannah went downhill so fast that her friend came over and checked her blood sugar.  They took her straight to the ER and she was in the hospital for about a week.

Over the last 3 years, my aunt has become a walking encyclopedia of diabetes knowledge.  Let me know if you want me to put you two in touch.

  • Good luck today.  There is a family in our hood with a diabetic child.  He wears and insulin pump and the family is very open.  She actually runs a support group and is very involved in fund raising for research.  I can put you in touch if necessary.

  • We've discussed it with the Pedi based on O's insatiable thirst and extreme reactions to hunger.  We had a first thing in the morning, fasting blood draw done over a year ago.  But he's never shown any other symptom so we opted against it.

I hope it all turns out well.  I'll be thinking of you guys today.

  • You all are in my thoughts today, hope everything goes well.

  • That sounds very positive! :) I'll keep my fingers crossed for your little man!

  • Thanks for the update - I have been thinking about you all day.  My fingers are crossed that the blood tests show negative on the diabetic front and that he is indeed just thirsty.

    Have fun in New Orleans!
