Yup... that just happened.

OK.  I have got to tell someone about this.  Today I was at work. (I am a retail supervisor- for now.)  We have an employee who is mentally disabled. He comes in a few days a week and dusts shelves and does other tasking as part of his program.

Said employee, (we'll call him J),  approaches me and asks if we can talk for a minute.  I say sure, invite him into my office, etc... The following conversation ensues:

Me: Hi J.  I see you're getting ready to leave for the day, what's up?

J: Well, I'm not really sure how to say this, but I think you have a crush on me.

Me:  Well, um... no, I don't.  I'm married.  I like you as a friend only, J.  Why do you think that?

J: You smiled at me.

Me: Ok, well I am a friendly person.  I like being at work and I smile at a lot of people.

J: Ok.  Because I don't really know what to feel and I am not allowed to be in a romantic relationship with anybody at work.

Me: Right.  Yes, well, I don't want to be in a relationship with you.  I am married.

J: So I think you want to be in a romantic relationship with me, and you can't.  I think we should just be friends.

Me: Yes, J.  I think that would be best.  I like you just the same as I like everyone else.  Not romantically.  Just as a friend.  I hope I don't make you uncomfortable.

J: No, not really.

Me: Ok.  Anything else?

J: No

Me: Ok, well have a good day.

I was so taken aback I was almost at a total loss for words. FML. Today was so ridiculous.

  • Oh my gosh!  To me as an outsider, that is really quite funny.  But, had it been me in your shoes, I would be so incredibly embarrassed and it would be such an awkward conversation to have.  I think you handled it really well.

Ditto! I thought it was funny, but I'm your shoes I have no idea what I would have said. You handled it great.

This!  Hope it won't be awkward next time you're both working at the same time.

  • Oh yes.  It was very funny.  Probably the one of the most awkward moments of my life.  I filed a written statement documenting the conversation, and talked with another manager so they could bear witness to my statement.  We had a good laugh over it.

  • Wow... it is kinda funny but how uncomfortable of a situation....
  • How awkward! However...kinda funny. It sounds like a scene from The Office.

  • That is totally a "bless your heart" kind of situation. But I couldn't help but laugh!

  • In situations like that, you have to have a great sense of humor.  Kudos for keeping it together and handling it in a great way!
