long term clothes storage

I just moved to a place where I'll probably never even need long sleeves.  Yet, all of our winter clothes are here and needing a place to live for the next 3 years until we move again.  We may pull some out for a ski trip once, but that's it.

My space is pretty limited, so what's the best way to get all this bulky stuff put away?  I'm even willing to have it out in the living room if it's not just piles of plastic bins.

I'm half tempted to get a storage unit.

Re: long term clothes storage

  • In our spare bedroom closet we have a plastic tote. In it we have clothes we hardly ever wear but still keep (i.e. winter outfits for when we go tubing/sledding or DH's cover alls when he shovels the driveway in the winter). I bought the jumbo vacuum seal bags and then put the bags in the tote.

I actually do the same thing with our blankets so when we have people stay over that occupy more than our guest room we have plenty of blankets but they're not visible in the LR and they're out of our way and it doesn't make our guest room cluttered.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest.  We change out our close in the closets every season and I vacuum seal them all after washing. It SOOO saves on space!  I can then put them under the bed or just leaning in the back of the closet and don't have to worry about them till later.

  • I have a bunch of plastic storage boxes that will fit under my beds and I have extra blankets, clothes, etc in there.
