Landlord practices

So we just applied for a condo the other day.  We were the first to submit an application for a pre-screen and then were asked to fill out an application last night for credit and criminal checks. I've heard back from the landlord that everything looked good, but he was wants to wait another day because someone else said they were going to submit an application tonight.

Can they do that?  We have been approved and done all the steps and I know that we were the first to complete all of this?  At this point I don't know what he would be basing his decision on.  I thought legally if you applied and were approved they couldn't at that point deny to rent to you.  I don't know much about the law though.  Just so weird.

Now I feel like I have to bake him cookies or something.  If I didn't need to change places soon then I would consider pulling my app for this.  It's weird.

Re: Landlord practices

  • Unfortunately (for you) there is no law that states "if applicant passes credit and criminal checks you must rent to them".. Landlords have the right to screen multiple applicants and choose the tenants they feel would best fit their needs. Perhaps there is something specific they're looking for in a tenant.. Or perhaps you make the bare minimum of income and they're hoping someone that makes more money will apply, hard to say really without you just ask them what is going on :)
