FFFC's and AW's

Go on, now, I know you've got something.

FFFC: I have been sick or injured for the entire month of September. I know it's no excuse, but I haven't really been following much in the way of news this month. I had no idea about the controversial death penalty case until earlier this week when a student asked me if I knew anything.

AW: I learned something new this week. Evidently, fingertips AND nerves grow back. My mantra has been similar to someone who just got bad haircut, "It will grow back, it will grow back!"

Re: FFFC's and AW's

  • AW: I finished stage 1 of New Rules of Lifting for Women and did the first workout of stage 2 last night. I've never lifted weights before, but I'm loving it. I'm starting to get a little muscle definition in my arms, and my upper legs look great! I bet I could lift more than my non-active husband on some exercises now.

For those of you who don't lurk on H&F, NROLFW is a book outlining a weightlifting program for women to teach them to lift heavy weights rather than little 1 lb dumbbells. It should take approximately 6-7 months to finish all 7 stages.

That's awesome! I LOVE lifting. You definitely see great results from lifting heavier as well. It took me a while to get out of the "I don't want to get big" mentality but I'm glad I did. It opens a whole new arena for women's fitness. I've never done the NROLFW program though, I might have to look into it!

I want to know more about this. I'm not interested in jumping on the latest fad, but I do thrive with a structured program and I haven't been lifting at all lately now that Kevin and I have been working opposite shifts.
  • AW: I went to the Maroon 5, Train, Matt Nathanson concert last night with the BF. It was cold and my feet hurt from standing in my boots the whole time but it was really good. I can't even remember the last concert I went to!

Also, I would totally have Matt Nathanson's babies.

And, Adam Levine seems like a total asshat.

  • I don't have a confession (yet) today, but my AW: Okla and I (and my sister) are doing the warrior dash this weekend. I'm feeling super pumped and badass, even though the obstacles will probably kick our asses.

TAKE THAT BACK. :) He's so hot that I want to believe he is a nice guy.

  • Confession: I've wanted to start NROLFW for like 6 months and I haven't because I'm afraid to look like an idiot at the gym. I need someone to do it with me, but the only girls I know who work out at my gym either think using an elliptical = running or think spending 25 minutes on a stationary bike is a workout. I need to buck up and quit worrying about what other people think. I'm ordering the book on Amazon right now. :)

I literally had the exact same thing typed out, but then I deleted it. I'm making DH be my "Personal Trainer" until I know how to do everything on my own haha. I'm lame...

  • FFFC: I was talking to a friend that's an elementary ed major. We were talking about math and she was telling me how she doesn't really know fractions. That really bothered me, since a lot of elementary math deals with the concept of fractions.

  • FFFC: I've watched WAY too much TV this week thanks to all the new shows starting up. And this weekend will be all about football, so my TV consumption won't go down much. I really need to back off.

AW: I'm planning a surprise trip to CO for Thanksgiving. H will either be working or coming back from training for deployment, so we didn't make plans for him to come home - but JJ and I are more than likely going out there. His roommate is helping me out with this, which is awesome. It's been so hard not to tell him, but I don't want to ruin it.

That's so ridiculous! I hate fractions, but even as a former linguistics major, I understand them.

So, is there no real concern for women who don't want to "bulk up"? I (perhaps naively) always worry about that when lifting heavier weights.

  • I've read most of NROLFW, and I like the concept. I haven't tried it yet because I don't have access to a gym, but that will be changing shortly. I've heard great things about the program, both on the H&F board and elsewhere, so I'm excited to do it! Lifting really has made a difference in my fitness I think.

AW: I'm in my last 3 hours of work! My main horse (the one in my siggy) is finally sort-of better, and I rode him this week for the first time in 2 months! I also rode a new horse last night, and he is uh-may-zing. Can't wait to ride him again this weekend! I've also read some great books lately, so between the good work-horse-books news, I've been pretty happy about life these days. :)

  • Well, here is my AW: I've been told my BF looks a bit like Adam Levine. MMMMHHHM.

Congrats, Ginger! So excited for you!

Wendy and I are going to do NROLFW "together" (we aren't at the same gym, but are going to start at the same time). Anyone else want to join us? We could do update/accountability posts on the board. I think I would have better success if I had a group of ladies to answer to.

I would be interested, but I probably won't be able to start for another month or so. But I will absolutely participate in a thread if you post it!

This makes me want to cry.  It's so unbelievable the lack of math classes that elementary ed majors have to take.  Sure, they probably don't need to take Linear Algebra or the 137 (<----it felt like 137 anyway) theory/proof classes I had to take, but not understanding fractions??  Ridiculous.
This is one reason I'm glad my degree is in Mathematics and not elementary ed, or even Math ed for that matter.  I guess that's my FFFC.

I've never heard of it until today, but I ltwrally did make Kevin teach me a bunch of stuff and I'm still afraid to look like an idiot. I just downloaded it though, so I'm in. I'll have him help me start each stage at our gym maybe and I'm sure it'll be a while before I'm willing to tackle this at the on-base gym. I'm way intimidated by all the guys who have been lifting for years and years.

It is very sad. Hopefully she'll learn and come to understand fractions in one of her future classes. I'm planning on showing her some fraction games I learned in my math ed class a last week that might help her and would be something she could use in her classes.

What's the difference between a math degree and math ed degree at OSU (that's where you went, right?) At OU, there's not much of a difference. Both degrees require the same amount of math classes and upper level math classes (the math ed degree just specifies a couple more and you have less of free choice of math classes.) Actually, math ed has one or two MORE math classes required. And instead of having 48+ free electives in any subject, math ed has to take Physics for Engineering Majors, History of Science, and all of the education classes. And Math Ed majors at OU have to graduate and then spend the next semester student teaching and taking another graduate class before they're done with the program, so it's a 4.5 year program. I guess my FFFC is: It frustrates me when people assume majoring in Math Education is so much easier than majoring in Math, because it's not (at OU at least.) Not saying that's what you meant, it just reminded me.

  • I want to run a marathon just so I can have a 26.2 sticker on the back of my car and show off.

BTW- most of you know this but I'm ALL about lifting heavy weights. It doesn't make you look "bulky" like most women think. I used to think it would until I started CrossFit.

  • I have also heard about that book and have wanted to get it! I would like to have muscular arms! I may just have to pick it up this weekend or order it!

AW: I started running again, since I took basically the whole summer off and it feels GREAT! C's 1st birthday is next week and I have mixed feelings. Its gone by so incredibly fast!! H's parents are coming to town for his bday. I have so much to get done between now and next Saturday!! AHHH!

I'd be interested in this! I don't know anybody else who lifts weights to teach me, so I always feel like an idiot whenever I have to try something new. It'd be nice to feel awkward together. How often do you want to do update posts? Weekly? Twice a week? More often?

I have figured out the less busy times at my gym when not as many people are around- Friday after work and Saturday afternoons during football season are deserted- so I like to try new moves them.  Plus I go through the motions at home first to try to figure it out, but it's never quite the same when you add weight.

Women don't have the testosterone to "bulk up." So unless you take steroids, you should be fine!
