Friiiiiiday...

I'm getting a kick out of all the people using their Facebook status to beg their friends to "hide" their activity stream. Hey genius, if you don't want anyone to see something, try not POSTING IT ON THE INTERNET. *hand/forehead*

Re: Friiiiiiday...

  • TGIF!!!!!

I know right Chelsea, isn't it hilarious.  I saw something about the new profile layout that's changing to a "timeline".  I think that's so cool.  I might be the only one though.  HA

I'm so excited about tonight!  We are finally going to a Rangers game!  YAY  Then Saturday we're going to see Journey in concert.  Fun weekend ahead of me!

    What's everyone doing this weekend?

  • My cube mate threw a mini hissy fit yesterday that she was the only one here that hasn't taken a sick day lately so she's not coming in today just because.  Which means that I am alone with a few people that I hope just stay in their office reading their books and leave me the heck alone.  I won't be feeling sorry for her if she actually gets sick.

Even though it was only a 3 day week for me, it has been such a long week.

  • I'm working from home today until J gets home from class, and then we're heading to my parents' house, and I'll probably work some more this evening... but then, it's a birthday weekend, which means lots of yummy food... possibly including my mom's amazing chicken fried steak.  Mmmm I can almost taste it already!!
  • We're meeting with an Exclusive Buyer's Agent tomorrow to talk about the process of looking for a house, and maybe working with him!

I'm a twinge disappointed only because we still haven't heard back from the listing agent on the 2 houses we wanted to see. But I'm hoping that I can tell the buyer's agent about this all tomorrow, and he'll handle making an appointment for us to see those houses.

  • I'll be glad when Homecoming week is over.  It's just so long and I'm getting too old to be out late every night of the week.

And, I get it.  Texas does Homecoming big and some people who aren't from here don't get it.  But you know what?  Stop complaining and telling the kids that they're wasteful and that they could feed a family for a week.  A lot of my students donate a lot of time to special causes and I don't have a problem with them spending money on mums and garters.  Plus, isn't it their money anyways?

  • I've got nothing to add other than I wish DH didn't have to work this weekend.  I think we're averaging about 10 hours a week that we see each other.  <insert my pouty face here>  I guess that's the price you pay for owning your own business.

I am excited to go to the Coach outlet in Allen tomorrow.  I have a coupon!

I loved homecoming growing up.  No one around me understands it and I got to hear for a week how it is incredibly tacky.  They are just jealous they missed out :P

    Exaaaactly.

I made my SIL's mum this year.  She is a freshman, and it's still HUGE.  She texted me this morning saying it was on the small side and people had lights and music on theirs. LIGHTS AND MUSIC!!!  I am amazed by some of this and I thought that mums were big 10 years ago!

Still, I think it's a fun tradition.  I always enjoyed it when I was in HS.  Smile

  • Yay for Fridays!! One day closer to football! :-) Hope the weather stays nice! :)

I'm one of those non-native Texans who really doesn't get the homecoming thing. It baffles me. My HS boyfriend asked if we were doing the mum & garter thing for homecoming, and I laughed out loud.

BUT... I would never make fun of a kid now for doing it, or try to make them feel bad for the money they spent. It's good clean fun, and a homey tradition. The more I think about it, the more I'm impressed that so many kids still care about it. Do I think mums are pretty goofy looking? Absolutely. But it's cool that there are teenagers who care about tradition.

  • 1. I am SO tired today. No idea why.

    2. I never did mums but always really enjoyed spirit days.

    3. With some exceptions (you ladies and some others) I hate people on the Internet. A girl on GP got attacked for a very personal choice she and her husband had to make about their unborn child. STFU Internet.

    4. I love chilly-ish weather.

I was in drill team, and we always bought our director's mum.  She honestly felt that the size of the mum directly correlated to how much we liked her... she was a bigger lady, and one year we got her a triple mum (with the biiiiig flowers), and it had fiber optic lights, and a battery pack, and even though she was bigger, she could have used a harness to keep it up.  She complained like crazy about the size, but everyone knew she was eating it up!

Triple mums are small now!  That was the huge one to me before I saw some of this craziness!  That's what my SIL has.  Mums are consistantly coming with 4-6 flowers (the big ones!)... And they don't pin them anymore, now they have a built in neck strap to hold it up.  I.am.amazed.

WOW!  I had a double one my senior year and that was a big deal.  It IS Texas after all.  We do everything big.  Go big or go home, right?  lol

  • A neck strap?!?!  That is awesome, in a good way and in a bad way.  Just wow.  Next, there will be an over-the-shoulder strap added in too - like a reverse backback.  We should start making those and selling them to the kids :)
  • Brianna - I saw the mum you did on FB.  It was very pretty.

I always had a big mum, too.  I even made the garter for my 'date'.  It was a ton of fun.  We would get all the stuff and hot glue it all together.  Those are some good memories.  Sometimes people just need to STFU in general.

  • A neck strap?  For a MUM???  Holy cow.

I have a lazy do-nothing weekend ahead of me.  Getting a pedi with my mom, highlights, resting and watching football.  I have felt just on the edge of getting sick all week so I want to rest as much as I can before Vegas.

  • Amanda, my sister is going to the Journey concert too!  I'm so jealous!  Have fun!

Leslie, I don't know how you stay on the GP board.  I lurked for about 5 min and went running!

RE homecoming: I never went to homecoming until DH asked me my sophomore year.  I wanted to experience the whole "going to homecoming with a guy" thing so bad that I bailed on drill team to go with him and got kicked off the team.  In retrospect, I really wish I hadn't done that...especially a week away from lettering. BUT at least we can say we went to homecoming together once!

Tonight I am going to the stupid Azle v. Boswell football game with my best friend to watch her husband coach and then tomorrow the Rangers game!  Pretty excited about tailgating with this awesome weather. :)

    This.

I went over just so I could see if I could find out what you were referencing, and now I have a headache from the acronyms. That's the thing I loved about this board... I didn't feel like joining you ladies was like learning a new language!

  • Regarding homecoming and mums, I didnt even know what those were when I moved here last year.  I saw some in the stores and was asking what in the world those were used for.  I dont get them obviously but like Chelsea I think its awesome that there is a tradition that HS kids care about and put thought and energy into.

I am so excited today!  Customer Service Week is coming up and we got a pretty measely budget that will only provide food for our teammates.  I REALLY wanted to do specialized customer service tshirts for them but was told NO WAY would I get that approved.  Yesterday I started calling some of the staffing agencies we use and asking for donations and I was able to get commitments for the entire amount of the tshirts.  I am SO SO SO excited and cant wait to surprise them with the shirts.

  • RE homecoming:  I always thought the 3 mums were the big ones but I guess they have just gotten bigger.  1 year me and my best friend made each others as a surprise since we didn't have guys to go with.  A friend of mine lived in a very small town out near San Angelo.  I went to visit her when her oldest was in Kindergarten.  Even the young ones had mums.  The little girl had a double that was as big as she was.  The entire town closed down to watch the parade and everyone in town was at the game that night.  That was an experience.  I just happened to pick that weekend and it was interesting.

My weekend should be pretty chill.  Tonight we might go to a movie or rent one for home.  Tomorrow my mom and I are going to a big consignment sale and hopefully getting baby furniture!  Tomorrow night we are going to Lewisville Western Days to see Pat Green and Sunday is lazy Sunday on the couch watching football all day.  I'm excited actually!

I grew up near there the first half of my life and the towns do shut down, not only for homecoming but most Friday nights during football season.

    Whereabouts did you go?

That is how it is here. They shut down everything early to watch the homecoming parade and game. It's madness. They all have their custom Claire Lynn shirts and overalls. It's pretty amusing.

I'm torn at what to do with a toxic situation. :( Womp womp.

  • Wow, y'all all seem to have a very different homecoming experience than I did.  I grew up in Dallas, but I guess being in the band, we could only wear mum's to school and not the game, so it just wasn't that big of a deal for me.  Then in college Texas A&M doesn't have a specific homecoming game (every one is supposed to be one).  When my parents were there my mom said you got a mum for every game, but I guess that died out by the time I got there.  Interesting.  Some of these sound huge.

I am in a gross mood today.  DH and I got into a big fight yesterday and it still isn't really resolved.  I hate that.  I'm supposed to be working, but I just can't concentrate.

Boo... I hope it gets better and resolved soon. :)

  • I'm not from Texas, but I love the homecoming mum tradition.  I still have my freshman year and senior year ones in my parents house.  I'm sure they'll be packed up soon and I'll have to figure out if I keep them.

Tonight we're going to try the Grapevine wine tour.  Hopefully it will be good, 3 tastings at 3 different vineyards and a nice dinner.
