Help out an old-fashioned gal

I want a newspaper subscription. Even if it's on the weekends. And I finally live (again) in a city with a large enough population for there to be news ;)

I was going to go with the Boston Globe because of name recognition until DH said, "Don't they have the Herald or something?"

So, which would you recommend and why? Or does it matter?

  • The Globe is generally more highly regarded than the Herald.  I couldn't give you specifics on why, but there you go Stick out tongue
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I tend to think of the Herald as more conservative.  (They endorsed McCain in 2008, Howie Carr is a contributor, etc.)

Also, IMO the Herald feels more tabloid-y than the Globe. But maybe I'm just biased because I'm a bleeding heart liberal, heh.

(Disclaimer: I have no issue with conservatives. But if you don't lean that way, you may want to take a look at the Herald online before you subscribe. Just don't read the comments, though that holds true everywhere. Stick out tongue)

    Exactly this.

The Herald reads like a tabloid sometimes, and it also has a reputation for sensationalizing (eg a college student died in a riot after a Red Sox game and the Herald published photos of her dead body, lying on the sidewalk, on the cover).

And yes, the Herald is known for being conservative, the Globe more liberal.

  • Definitely the Globe over the Herald.  You can also get the NY Times delivered here as well.
  • If you are buying, get the Globe.

I used to get free Heralds downtown on the way home from work :)

  • The Globe is the way to go!
