Did you read the American Girl books when you were younger? I used to collect the books and I really wanted a doll but I never got one. I was just looking at the website and I guess I must be old because they retired almost all of the American Girls that I used to read. My favorite was Felicity.
Re: American Girl Books
I definitely remember those. I had Kirsten.
MrsBini, I think they did come out as we were getting older (I'm 28), but I had younger sisters so my mom couldn't have excluded me. Having younger sisters allowed me to play with dolls and Barbies looong after most girls stopped, I'm sure.
The American Girl Place in Chicago is like the holy land for little girls nowadays. We went when it first opened (I was pretty old by then). My mom was so pissed because you actually had to pay for a seat if you brought your doll to lunch at their restaurant. We didn't eat there and she wouldn't let us buy anything either. We had most of the clothes for our dolls made by some old lady in town.
I think I was about 9 when I got my American Girl doll, Samantha. I still have her- she made the trip to Germany. I just went to the site too, and its really sad that they retired Kristen, Samantha, and Felicity. I especially think that Kristen was an interesting time period, sad.
I was looking forward to taking my daughter to the American Girl Place in New York. Obviously, I'll have to try for another baby, or borrow someone's daughter for an afternoon
Yes, I read them up until Kit came out. My sister went as Felicity one Halloween. My mom sewed her a costume just like Felicity used to wear in the books.
I told my in-laws once about how much I used to want a doll but it was never within our means, and they ended up getting me Felicity for Christmas a couple of years ago. It was such a thoughtful gift--it was mostly an off-hand comment about it so they were really listening.
Especially now that Felicity is 'discontinued,' I'm really grateful to them for the gift.
Seriously that is adorable!
I got my first doll when I was in 3rd grade. One of the ones you could pick the hair and eye color. I later got Josefina too. I enjoyed reading the books and always found them very interesting. Especially Molly's and Kirsten's. I'm planning to look around at Goodwill and garage sales to pick up a few more for the future.

Now Nesting from Chicago, IL My nail blog:
I'm older than MrsBini and although I never had any of the dolls or books, I remember getting the catalog and wanting them. I'm not entirely sure what happened because a couple years ago, my mom lamented that she never "got" to buy me one because I hated dolls. Or something. I must have been too shy to ask for one. I dunno.
My mom bought a Kirsten for Bean just after they decided to retire her, so everything was on sale. It's still in the States since I think Bean is still too young to appreciate it, but at some point, we'll get one for Bug too.
I read some of the books and my grandma bought me some American Dolls for Christmas when I was younger (one at a time of course). I think I got Samantha, Josefina, and maybe one other. She would also get me some of the accessories...like I had a big trunk, lots of different outfits, and for some reason crutches and a cast!
I really liked them when I was younger.
I loved American Girl! I had Addy and Samantha. Sometimes, when I'm at my mom's I'll pick up the books and read through them again.
In 4th grade I had an American Girl Christmas and was super lucky because my cousin's girlfriend's father made the wooden prototypes for the AG. I got a sled and a school desk.
A few years ago I lived in Chicago and my sister came to visit. We went to the AGPlace to relive our childhoods. Such a cool place.
I hope they are still popular when the day comes for me to have a little girl!
