what's the formula for buying wine for parties?

Hosting a couples shower for 40ish people and I have no idea how much wine to buy.

We'll have beer and a choice of red or white. Does anyone know a formula of how much wine I should buy?

Re: what's the formula for buying wine for parties?

  • I found this online:

    - Buy red wine for 60% of the adults
    - Buy white wine for 40% of the adults
    - Buy beer for 20% of the adults
    - Assume 1/3 bottle of wine per person
    - Assume 4 bottles of beer per person
    - Once you've made the calculation of how many bottles you need of red and white wine, and beer, round up to the nearest 1/2 case.

  • the above reference is helpful, but it helps to know your guests too. in my family, it's not at all unusual to have a party where 1 person = 3/4 bottle alone. we're winos.
  • I also think that you need to know your guests. Also take into consideration the length of the party.
  • It's a couples shower and I feel like half of the guests will drink beer and half will drink wine. I just don't even know where to start.

40 guests = 12 bottles of red, 12 bottles of white and 3 cases of beer?

    Too much? Not enough?

  • Hi!  How long is the event?  When I used to work in catering a good formula for glassware drinks etc. was that during the first hour of the party each guest would get one drink, half would go back for a second, then plan for one drink per guest each additional hour.... so this is what I come up with based on a 4 hour event:

20 x 4.5 = 90 glasses of wine (usually there are 4.5 glasses of wine per bottle)

    20 x 4.5 = 90 beers

so... I think your above estimates look pretty good.

    :)

  • I agree you know your guests and if they're big drinkers or not. Since it's a festive/happy occasion people tend to drink more than a typical get together. I say it's better to have too much than not enough. So whatever YOU like get extra of. That way if your stuck with the left overs it's not a bad thing. ;) Also, if anyone asks/offers I don't think it's a big deal to say, "If it's convenient how about a bottle of wine."...there's your "back up supply".
