Good Digital Camera Suggestions?

Hi All:

My husband and I realized after taking pics with our pretty good, but not that great, cell phone cameras on our honeymoon a couple of weeks ago that we really need to invest in a good digital camera. We'd prefer something not-too-bulky, with a good flash, and pretty high resolution, and other good pertinent features for both indoor and outdoor photography. And possibly a way to set a timer to take photos. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Good Digital Camera Suggestions?

  • Every digital camera out there should have a flash and a timer on it, and the resolution on even the most basic ones now is good enough for enlarged prints (unless you want a mural size thing). I actually avoid shooting at the camera's highest resolution because then the files on the computer are huge and they take forever to upload. I generally shoot at 2 megapixels. I do turn up the resolution when we go on trips and I'm taking pics that I might want to blow up or zoom in.

As for choosing, I've had good luck with Canon point-and-shoots. But, I'd just go to a store and start trying them out. Get an idea for how slow the camera turns on, and how long it takes after pushing the button to actually snap a photo with the flash on. I hate when you have to hold the button down forever and it flashes 6 times before taking an actual photo.

I always save photos to my computer (which is what I voted for), but I also upload my favorites to my Picasa web albums account (linked to my google account). When I want pics to frame for work or home, I print them. I used to print for scrapbooks, but I haven't done any scrapping in more than a year now... so I've stopped pretending I'll have time for it someday.

  • I have a Canon s95 and I LOVE it.  It is a great point and shoot camera.  Costs a little more than some of them, but I think it is totally worth it.
  • I have a canon powershot that I love.  We bought it 3-4 years ago and I take it all over the place.  It's holding up well to my wear and tear from lugging it all over and still takes great photos.
