A few weeks ago I was applying to jobs and paid internships thinking nothing would really come of it and just hoping to see if anyone would show interest. Well, a company called me today and asked me to come in for an interview tomorrow. Never wanting to turn down an opportunity I went ahead and said I'd come in, but didn't mention I'm 8 months pregnant.
Now my dilemma is this: do I go in and say I can work for a few weeks then take a break when baby is born and would be able to start again in February OR do I just say I could start in February and forget mentioning working now because I'm in my last month of pregnancy?
I understand they are VERY unlikely to pick me for the position I'm interviewing for, but I just thought I shouldn't say no to an interview and it's always possible they would keep me in mind for the future. What do INs think? Am I crazy for even going?
Re: Interview 8 months pregnant (help!)
Is it for a specific position that they are looking to fill immediately? If so, to be honest, I would probably call back and be upfront that you are not available to start until February (you don't even have to mention you're pregnant) and if they are still interested then you can go for the interview.
I wouldn't want to waste their time or yours if you know that you are not going to be available for a job they are looking to fill right now.
ETA: Congrats on getting the call to interview! That always makes you fell good.
Cecilia arrived 12 October 2012
That said, I had a woman in my office in the NL that was recruited while she was visibly pregnant. They didn't care that she was pregnant or going on maternity leave because she had the qualifications that she was looking for.
They do want to fill the position soon from what I understand, however my thinking is that even if they decide I'm not right for this job they might want to keep me in mind for the future -- like a different job opening up in Feb or March.
TotZiens: That's kind of my thinking too...that I should just focus on what's at hand. Hmmm.
Going to the interview still provides you with practice. Put both options on the table - working a bit then going on leave, or just starting in February. Never know what might happen.
I agree with Faye. Finding jobs can be hard, so it's a smart idea to go on the interview and put the option out there. It's an interview--just a meeting to discuss a possibility--it's not like they're bringing you in with an offer on the table and you'd be wasting their time. Plus, interview practice can never hurt and it's always good to network.
Ok, just spoke with my parents as well (wanted lots of input on this for some reason) and I am definitely going to go in and take it as seriously as any other interview at any other time. We'll see what happens...and like MCC said, it's just an interview. No harm going in.
I'll update tomorrow!
ETA: Forgot to say thanks for the input! It's been helpful.
That being said, I would go to the interview, it is good practice. Let them know that you are interested, and come prepared to show that you would be definitely available in February.
Dude, this is Spain! (I mean this in a good way.) If this were the States I'd say no.
Go for it. It's worth a try! Suerte!
I'm glad you decided to go. I agree, it's good for practice and great for networking.
Good luck!
