CD Momma's come in

I need some serious help with my CDs because I'm ready to give up completely.

It took us a long time to figure out how much detergent to use in order for the diapers to get clean and for Preston to not get a diaper rash. Now that we finally figured that out, I have another problem.

They seem to be repelling his pee almost ALL the time now. I stripped them the other day with the Dawn and a pot of boiling water and apparently NO such luck.

What can I do next so I don't totally give up? We put a lot of money into these diapers, I'm not willing to throw the towel in quite yet but I'm this close.

Thanks girls!

Re: CD Momma's come in

  • Have you tried bleach?

We went through a lot with rashes, and what it came down to for us was ---

    one cold wash

one hot wash with a regular amount of Purex Free and Clear

two hot rinses (for my washer I have to set it to fill on the wash cycle and then turn it to rinse when it's full since my machine does all rinses on cold)

Every two weeks or so I add a 1/2 cup of bleach to the wash cycle and do an extra hot wash cycle instead of one of the rinses to make sure all the bleach gets out.

If they are repelling, they are built up. The dawn didn't work, so I would move to bleach... I read up a lot on the diaperswappers website forums and that was the one thing that people were always hesitant to try - but had success with when they did.  It worked for us.

  • Thanks, Jaye. I think we figured out that it's a build up from fabric softeners that we use on our regular clothes. I don't use them on the diapers but I guess the film builds up in the dryer and leaves the film on the diapers.

Since I haven't been sun drying them since I went back to work, it totally makes sense!

Time to get a drying rack!

Oh and does the bleach ruin the color of your diapers??

  • Man that sucks!

The bleach doesn't harm the dipes at all.  My BGs are perfectly fine, and my prefolds are like majorly bright!  BG actually recommends bleaching at least once a month anyway, that's how I felt confident trying it.  You just add it to the bleach compartment and let the washer do it's thing.

It does sound like your build up could be from fabric softener.  I wonder if you can hand wipe the dryer with a bleach solution to get it clean?

Definitely get an indoor drying rack.  We always do ours outside, but have a rack for inside just in case.  I hate running the dryer for dipes.

You'll probably still want to get a good stripping to get you back to square one, just in case :)

  • bleach is awesome for cd's every once in a while. i don't see why people are so opposed to it really. it has definitely helped me keep some stinkies at bay when i was using a lot of synthetic fibers

Good Lord, it sure has and I hope this is the end of it. I don't want to give up on my cloth so if this works, I will be forever grateful! I'm also going to make my own damn wool dryer balls and eliminate the dryer sheets all together! Ay yi yi!!

  • what kind of detergent are you using?

Have you tried using dawn to strip in the washer?

I also second the bleach! And if you look up on BG's website they will even tell you to use it.

Do you see a "shadow" or anything on the inside of your pockets? if so there is a stick (buncha farmers stain stick) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea2kLciqpAQ

that you can use to get the grease out if you have used any diaper rash cream

  • I don't envy you at all!  It was terrible trying to figure out what worked for us.  I didn't want to give it up but Aria's rashes were soooo terrible for awhile. It almost resorted in a trial sposie session just to get the rash cleared up...but our last resort (bleach) finally did wonders.  We did figure out though that she has eczema (that even takes over her diaper area, which is rare) and some of the most sensitive skin...so that didn't help matters.  But once we figured it all out, it just clicked, you know?  No problems since we started using bleach.

Another thing I've noticed (don't know if this could be a potential rash thing for you too) is that Aria has a skin sensitivity to the non natural fibers.  So if she goes in BGs for more than half the time she gets super rashy.  So I cut up a bunch of old t shirts and use them as liners in my pocket dipes to keep her skin next to cotton.  It helps a lot :)

Stick with it!  It'll be worth it.

  • Also, if you are looking for a CD safe softener you can get Ecover , you can use it on your diapers too if you want.

Throw it in a downy ball (since it is liquid) and it'll make your clothes soft but won't hurt your diapers!
