Birth Story

On September 10th I was getting ready to have dinner out with my in-laws when I started feeling contractions.  They were not too painful, and 10-12 minutes apart.  I went out to dinner with my in-laws, and then came home.  The contractions were about the same so I got ready for bed.  I remember my doctor told me that I would know it was coming because I wouldn't be able to sleep through "real" labor.  I woke up at 12:30 am with painful contractions.  I walked around downstairs, and tried to rest.  DoggieCrushing was following me around not knowing what to do.  DH got up with me, but I told him to sleep.  The contractions were only 8-10 minutes apart at that point.  By 9am they were 5 minutes apart, with one spacing out to 8-10 minutes every 90 minutes or so.  Then I started with the bloody show.  I called my OB, and I told her I wanted to stay home as long as I could.  She asked me to come in to just get checked out because of the bloody show.  I went in, and I was completely effaced.  I was only 2 cm dilated though.  She told me to go home to labor, and that it could be that night or the next morning.  So I went home.  The contractions wavered between 5 minutes apart to jumping up to 8 for a while, and then back down.  I couldn't sleep.  That night the contractions started coming 3-5 minutes apart.  At about 8am the next morning I was in so much pain.  I had been sitting in the tub at my house off and on all night, but by the morning I just didn't want to be sitting anymore.  I needed to be up.  I called my OB, and they told me to come in again.  I got to the hospital, and was 4 cm dilated.  They told me I would have a baby by dinner time!  I walked around until I threw up.  Then I stayed in my room.  I tried the birthing ball, and the rocker.  Mostly I just walked in my room.  Then my heart rate went up, and they told me I couldn't get out of bed for a while.  That is when the contractions were the most painful.  After 34 hours of contractions I asked for an epidural.  I was 8 cm at this point.  I really wavered about getting it so late in the game, but I needed it.  An hour later I was 9.5 cm.  The doctor said we would wait another hour.  Another hour passed, and I was still 9.5...and now my contractions were less frequent.  The doctor said I was going to start pushing anyways.  The baby was so low he said I would be done in 30 minutes.  I started pushing, but couldn't move the baby because I wasn't having contractions.  They started me on pitocin.  Two hours later still very few contractions, and I was struggling to move her out with just my pushes.  Another 30 minutes, and my heart rate was going crazy.  The doctor said he was getting the vacuum.  He told me they would try three times (his policy) if she wasn't out then I would have to have a c-section.  He said I had been in labor too long, and my uterus just wasn't contracting anymore.  I pushed four more times.  On the fourth push (with the help of the vacuum) she came out!  I was so relieved.  At this point there were about 10 people in the room because they were worried about the baby.  The pediatrician was in as well as an intern, and a team of nurses.  She was fine though.  She was perfect.  They checked her over, and gave her to me!  It was amazing.
