New Kindle?

Anyone looking at the new kindle offerings? I have been considering getting one for a while, but have held back because I have already decided that my next splurge will be a lens, so I was considering doing the Kindle next. But at the $79 price, I feel like It qualifies as only a quasi-splurge. lol. I just don't know how I feel about buying something outright and having ads on it for an indefinite period.

Re: New Kindle?

  • I'm looking at the nook for Christmas. (again)
  • I love being able to carry around multiple books with me in one smallish device. I don't love the cost of paying for the books (I used to buy mostly inexpensive used books) and I also think it's not very easy to flip around, if you're the type of reader who likes to do that - to remind yourself of something you read a few chapters ago or something like that. I can't speak to the ads part, because mine doesn't have them.
  • Madisen, why nook over kindle? I haven't done my research yet.

  • I just started using H's kindle over the weekend and I am absolutely obsessed. I will never read a paper book again. I don't know what the buying outright or ads things mean though.

  • I have the Kindle 2 wifi. I love, love, love it. I don't think I would like the ad version very much and I would consider the higher price to not have ads. I'm thinking about getting the Kindle Fire tablet that was just announced. It seems like a good option for me since I would mostly use it at home for Nesting, reading blogs, etc.

The biggest difference to me as to why I prefer the nook is that the nook is compatible with the ePub format while the kindle is not.  So free lending library access on the nook.  Supposedly Amazon will figure something out eventually, but I also like the idea of supporting B&N over Amazon on this one.

  • The new kindle is $79 if you agree to have ads on the screensaver and the home page. To me I feel like ads are okay if you are giving me a cheap subscription service (you have to make up the difference somehow), but if I am buying a device and paying once, I feel like the ads should be for a limited time. It doesn't seem like they are that obtrusive (they aren't on the actual book pages), but it annoys me on principle.

I was super anti-readers, but then I played around with my mom's, and I definitely want one. Especially since Madisen clued me in to the fact that you can borrow ebooks from the library.

  • is ePub the same as the Overdrive stuff? The new kindle apparently works with Overdrive, which I think is what JPL uses.

    Kindles do too now apparently.

Oh, thanks for clarifying. I would have no problem with ads on the home page and screen saver as long as they aren't on actual book pages.

  • I love my kindle.  I got it as a gift, but if I bought my own I would have no problem with ads.

That's the Kindle Fire tablet. I'm thinking H is going to get me one for Christmas since I've been wanting a tablet.
