Newborns & CDs

We didn't start cloth diapering until Eli was 1, so the newborn phase of it will be new to me. We have a lot of BG 3.0s and plan to get some new 4.0s. For those of you who use BG, what age/size did your baby start fitting in them well?

I am hesitant to buy something new for the newborn phase, so we're leaning toward sposies until the BGs fit.

Re: Newborns & CDs

  • We started BG'd at 3 months which was when they fit good, around 10 lbs but DD was a slender 10lbs. We rented the kissaluvs from Nell's and bought 3 thirties duo covers for the first 90 days.
  • baby rabies has some pretty good posts about CDing a newborn and the sunshine diaper rental but I don't have any advice because we started CDs around the same time!

  • We started in CD with BG at about 3 mos., used disposables until then, I'd probably do that again, just easier with a newborn and not wanting to really think about having multiple sizes of diapers.

  • I bought the BG's in October 10 when she was about 6m old.  We did disposables until the GroVia AI2 fit her.  We are probably going the disposables for the first few months route again.

  • We did prefolds with thirsties, and were able to start using BG's somewhere between months.  He was 9lbs 4oz at birth though, so he didn't have have far to go to hit 10lbs.  We only had 7 or 8 at that point, so we still did prefolds also.

  • Colby was born at 9lbs 1 oz, so it wasn't the fit that had me hesitating.  I was intimidated by the laundry aspect of CD's (and now realize it is WAY easier than I thought it would be.)  I also did repairs on a lot of my stash as C is the third kiddo to use them.

Anyway, we used disposables until 11.5 weeks; we were clueless in all other aspects of parenthood, so needed the easy way out with diapers.  He fit very well in our BG 3's, so we could/should have started sooner.

  • We didn't think of trying cloth until 2 months.  When we did, we did end up using the onesize diapers (which we have many many brands...got from a friend).  They were bulky, but for the pockets, if you just used the smallest absorbancy, it wasn't bad.

When we have another newborn, I'm going to mass produce and use these:

  • We started around 8 or 9 lbs.  Don't mess around with the foldover inserts - they're super bulky.  Better off using one or two doublers.
