Back story - My parents are taking my entire family on a trip to the FL keys just after Thanksgiving as a Christmas present which rocks. None of us kids are financially able to afford vacations right now with home remodeling, finishing school, and having a baby so this is a wonderful treat for all of us.
Because we're going to be basically done with Christmas early - we decided to spend Christmas day volunteering. My family is going to be planning, shopping for, and making Christmas dinner for approximately 50 women and kids in a domestic abuse shelter. We want the meal to be something out of the ordinary for them but still somewhat economical and easy to make for a crowd. (no soup or chili and probably not lasagna either since I understand they get that a lot from groups)
Any ideas for a festive holiday meal that feeds 50??
Re: Food for 50?
That's awesome. I'll look in my book and allrecipes.com recipe box and see if anything stands out. I've done several big dinners though so I should have some ideas!
Tortellini soup is the first thing that comes to mind! It's easy and yummy and fun. With some good bread and salad and dessert.
MY BLOG!
I have been trying to talk DH into convincing his family for us to do this at Thanksgiving for a while now. One idea that can be done fairly affordably would be to do a set-up like the The Meatball Shop, with less options. You could do a soup buffet with salad and various breads. You can do a regular turkey dinner and ask local farmers to donate fresh produce (I know Dec is iffy for that, but it's possible). Another option, if you feel comfortable going ethnic, would be to make tamales and various Mexican sides.
Maybe this will help?
