Seamstresses: ? about interfacing

I'm making a tree skirt that has appliqued snowmen. I would like to machine applique. Could I use the fusible interfacing I have left over from another project as stabilizer? Thanks!

Re: Seamstresses: ? about interfacing

  • I would use heat and bond and that way it would hold the two fabrics together while you sew them.
  • Another question: (Please forgive me, I've never appliqued before!)

Can you break down the layers I need for me? I'm not sure exactly what I need.

  • Is what *I* would do: For the top of the tree skirt you need 3 fabrics; your main fabric, heat and bond and then your applique fabric. Take the white snowman fabric and iron the heat and bond to the wrong side. Cut out the snowman shape and then peal the paper backing off of the back. You can now iron it to the main skirt fabric and then zig zag stitch around the snowman to make it permanent. You don't even have to sew it if you don't want, for something like a tree skirt (that I would never wash) you wouldn't have to worry about it coming off.

You can do multiple layers of the heat n bond for things like the noes and hat.

Then once you have the top finished I'm guessing you would do a layer of batting and then the bottom fabric and maybe bind it?

    I hope that helps.

You could use felt or fleece for your background and then you won't need the batting, backing and binding.
