Re: Anyone from England here?

  • I get that people aren't going to know everything about where they visit, but this is obviously a concern of hers and I find it odd that she didn't look it up.

  • My dad was here in 1973, is coming back in a few weeks and came up with a few good things he remembers.  40 years ago pal things have changed!

    That's what I was thinking.

Honestly it was not something I thought of until I was typing, but of course smoke would be a concern for me when traveling with my 2 little kids.  I have not lived in an area that allows smoking in restaurants in many years, well before the kids were born, so it does not dawn on me often that other areas allow it.  And the last time I was in England there was still a lot of smoking in restaurants although most of my time on my 3 trips were not spent in London.  And no, I did not think it changed and it did not dawn on me that I should look up something that I thought to still be true.

But I did appreciate being corrected although I find it hysterical that I was C&Pd for it.

I hope I didn't sound like a diick about it.

Have a great time with the kids! London isn't my favourite but there is so much to do and see.

No, you didn't.  But being C&Pd is a little annoying but I know it is part of being on this website.  And hell, if no one had stupid questions on here then there would be barely any posts anyway.

What is your favorite?  Just curious, I know we will not get in too much besides London and Northampton on this trip though.  This is my fourth trip to the UK but all I have really seen in areas around Northampton, Llandudno Wales, Cambridge and the very touristy London.

  • You can also try toptable.co.uk to look for restaurants in major cities in England. They also have a specific "best for" search section and you can look for kid-friendly recs. There are also some great deals on there.

If you're not tied to visiting London, since you've been many times before, I've liked Oxford and Windsor If you're interested in going further north, what about York or the Lake District is beautiful.

    Where is your husband's family?

They are in Northampton.  We will have a car for the 5 days we will be in Northampton (we are staying in a hotel) but did not plan on keeping it while in London b/c of parking costs.  We are doing 5 days in London.  On this trip we won't be doing overnight anywhere else but would be open to one or two day trips.  And I will definitely keep these in mind for our next trip.

  • I can understand a C&P for someone that was a complete idiot, but this is just totally bitchy to me.

ITA. It's awfully normal for one's previous experience in a place to come to mind when you're talking about going there again, even if it's been while.

exactly.  It was a legitimate worry since she had experienced smoking in restaurants here before.  I don't usually research the smoking bans before visiting somewhere, but I would totally remember a place that still allowed it.

ditto, this. I still think of DC as a smoking town and I highly doubt it is but when I lived there and visited there throughout college it definitely still was. I don't plan on looking it up before I go back  becuase whatever, I can't change it and will just have to live with it if it IS still a smoking town. It'll just be a nice perk if its not anymore.
