Average life of a laptop?

I don't belong here (read: I've never posted here), but I'm wondering what you all think the average life of a laptop is for casual use?

  • depends:

just for web surfing? at LEAST five years

    gaming? 4+

the technology of the laptop should become obsolete before it bytes the dust. otherwise, waste of money ::cough dell cough::

  • DH formatted my work laptop for home use after I got a desktop here.  It was a Dell bought new in 2004 and it still works perfect. The only thing i've had to replace on it is the battery and keyboard (which DD spilled soda on and it got all crusty. lol)

It's used for internet mostly, some photo editing, and DD watches movies on it occasionally.

  • About 3 to 5 years. My current one is going on six years. I'm very suprised it has lasted this long.
  • I would say 3-5 years before getting a new one but it will last longer than that.  I was getting a new one every 4 or so years though Best Buy's No Lemon policy, this last time we didn't buy the service plan for and I'm kind of kicking myself because for the past 10 years or so I've been getting a brand new laptop for the price of the service plan.  I think I'll have my current one for at least 5 years.
  • Well my first laptop lasted for 3 years, then I bought Mac and it has lasted for almost 5 years. So I would say 3-5 years. But then again, it?s not about how long laptop lasts, but how soon it becomes obsolete against upcoming technology. Every new gadget turns out to be faster, sleeker and better.
