layoffs are tough. i've had to go through 3 rounds of laying off my people throughout my career. i just recommend short and sweet, don't beat around the bush, keep it matter of fact and let hr handle any questions or dialogue they should be handling.
i've always had relatively small, close-knit groups too so i get how sucky these can be. the choice of who to layoff should be based on merit and not emotional. and again, it kind of is what it is and you really have no choice in thematter so as quickly and painlessly as possible is what i suggest.
