Cost of de-thatching a lawn?
So we have a few areas that have thatch in our lawn. Is aerating and de-thatching two completely different things?
Any idea how expensive it is to rent the equipment to do this? Or to hire a landscaping company to come do it for us?

Re: Cost of de-thatching a lawn?
It cost us $75 to have our lawn detached. They took a truckbed full of grass back with them (we needed it done bad). It was worth it to get it done and not spend our weekend to do it.
I'd guess equipment rental would be at least $30, but check your local equipment rental stores for current prices.
Did you just call any landscaping company? For $75, we will totally have it done professionally, heck even for double that it would be worth it IMO.
$75 is fairly standard in the Midwest for a company to come dethatch and possibly even aerate your lawn.
It is two different techniques. Dethatch removes what I call the "undercoat" of a lawn while aerating helps break up clay soils and such
I would dethatch in the fall. If you've got a good landscaper, they could tell you if you need to aerate. Just make sure you ask a lot of questions and see if he/she can explain to you why--versus just trying to sell you on something.
So far its a fail on finding a company that either services our area, or de-thatches. Ugh. I can't believe a company said no when we are 10 miles from the city they are located.
Should I bother trying Trugreen? We don't need them for their other services, so I am hesitant to call them.
Eeekkkk! You said TruGreen!
If you have a strong backbone and won't be persuaded into more services (ie. fertilizer you don't need) I would go ahead and give them a holler. I hope it works out for you.
Quick question: do you fertilize and/or irrigate your lawn a lot? I'm just curious to why you think you need to dethatch.
