Anyone here own a greenhouse?

I've wanted a greenhouse for years and now that we are going to own our home, i'll finally have a yard to put on into.  This is the one that has caught my eye:http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/product/easystart-greenhouse/hobby-greenhousesDoes anyone have any tips or recommendations for a small greenhouse? I'm not exactly sure how i'm planning on using it other than for starters for the garden and just keeping plants that I don't want in my house (due to cats).

Re: Anyone here own a greenhouse?

  • I don't but I'm glad you shared this because DH and I were just talking about adding one sometime in the next few years.  I was going to contact our local Extension office and do some research thru them when the time came.

I want one to start seeds for the vegetable and flower gardens as well as keep winter vegetables and winterize plants in a nice consistent environment.

  • I don't know where you are located, but that listing doesn't say anything about it being headed/unheated.  If you're in a place with bitterly cold winters & the greenhouse is unheated, it still might be too cold for seed starts (you can check what temp they need to germinate by googling) & other plants.  The unheated greenhouse I work at doesn't get above 40* in the winter.

oh, that's something I didn't think about, so thanks for the reply! I guess I assumed that it would "hold in" heat from the sun, but they don't do that huh?  I live in Kansas, so we get horribly hot as well as horribly cold - I would definitely need some sort of heater then.

They are warmer on the inside than the outside, but the walls of that look kind of thin & not "insulated"  (often the outside walls of greenhouses will be like bubble wrap except the pockets will be full of warm air).

Maybe you can call the company & ask how many degrees warmer the greenhouse is inside?  Then, you can look up the temperature needs of the seeds you'd start & the other plants.

That greenhouse may certainly fit your needs, but I just wanted to make sure before you dropped $$$!

I'm lusting after a greenhouse but our yard is far too small (and too shady even if it wasn't too small) for one!
