possibly moving to michigan...where to live?
hi ladies!
my man and i are considering moving from south florida to michigan. his family is all up there in the grand rapids area. i was wondering if you all had some recommendations on where to look. i am born and raised in south florida and he has been here for 28 years, so we would like to stay close to water and close to a city area. please help! i need to get excited about this.
Re: possibly moving to michigan...where to live?
First, define "close". There are small cities on the water, or Grand Rapids which is ~ 40ish minutes from Lake MI.
Are you going to be concerned about schools in the future?
Are you familiar with Michigan's dismal economy (and lack of jobs)?
40 minutes isnt too bad.
yes, by the time we get up there we probably will need to be considering school zones.
he is a police officer and i will be a nurse...we wont be moving for 5 years because im in school and we want for him to reach his 10 year mark before we move. so we arent too worried about the economy. he would like to work for grand rapids and he doesnt like to live in the city he works for, so we need something thats not in grand rapids but not too far from it (id say ideally 20 - 30 min.). i have been looking at the muskegon area. do you know how far that is from grand rapids?
There are a few of us who live in the Muskegon area--including me.
If you live specifically in Norton Shores/Fruitport near the US31/I96 interchange, you'll be about 35-45 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, closer to an hour from the eastern parts of GR.
You'll also be within 10 minutes from about 4 Lake Michigan beaches. It's definitely very different from south FL (one of my favorite places to visit), but we really love where we live. There are also a few hospitals in Muskegon/Grand Haven if you're looking to work closer than GR.
I don't have kids, don't know anyone with school age kids and didn't grow up in the immediate area, so I can't comment on the school districts from personal experience. I have heard that Spring Lake is good. Living off M-104 would be most convenient to GR, but not *quite* as convenient to as many Lake MI beaches.
Mona Shores is the school district for most of Norton Shores and I've heard that's also one of the better districts in the area--you do have to pay attention here, because parts of Norton Shores will fall into the Grand Haven school district which is much larger and Grand Haven High School is pretty far from Norton Shores.
Fruitport has the lowest property taxes in the area.
