We our hosting a viewing party at the end of the month, and there are 15 people invited. We've never hosted a party with more then 5 or 6 people just because our tiny apartment didn't have enough sitting room, unless we wanted the guests to get friendly. Anyway, we are in our new house, with a nice size living room, and we have a nice sectional. We also have plenty of chairs to set out. What I'm curious is if we have pizza or wings, should we ask people to bring finger foods, or just plan to serve everything. In the past with the 5-6 guests, we always did potluck, since that was the theme with our friends. Since these are new guests, I'm not sure if its the polite thing to do. Sorry if I ended up talking in circles!

Re: Football viewing party
I don't usually straight up ask people to bring something. If someone offers I might take them up on it and give them a little direction- snack food or desserts.
What time is the game? It's very rare that it's not going to fall over a mealtime. I'd lean toward serving some type of meal, more than wings. So maybe provide pizza, salad, and breadsticks.
Then you can have snacks or desserts by you or guests. Snacks could be as simple as chips and dip, pretzels with dipping sauce and brownies for desserts.
We just hosted a football party yesterday for a couple of friends. I had chicken tenders with dipping sauces, mini hot ham & cheese sandwiches, pretzels, cheese & crackers, grapes, brownies and oatmeal cookies. They brought some sort of a chocolate no bake cookie, but they offered to do it. If it's over lunch time, I don't think you have to do a full out meal necessarily, just plenty of things that could make up a meal.
I like this idea. You plan to have everything, then just subtract something when someone says they'll bring something.
