Oven-cleaner...

So, Maggie (that's me in the third person) did something very stupid today, and started preheating the oven with my tupperware full of cookies still inside. Needless to say, I have toxic melted plastic (and some very burned oatmeal cookies) all over my oven. I got a lot of it scraped up, but theres still a lot left over, and I dont know how clean it.Any suggestions?

Re: Oven-cleaner...

  • Oh, no!  Once when i was baby sitting early on in my childcare "career" one of the kids put an action figure in the oven and i didn't check it before preheating to make dinner.  Horrible smells ensued.

Anyway, i think i would scrape up what you can (especially the cookies), then (with open windows!) turn it on low enough to start softening the plastic, then scrape it up, maybe with a sturdy metal spatula?  Don't heat any more than you need to -- if you keep the temperature low it might take a little while, but you should be able to peel it up, i would think.  Good luck!

  • I don't have any suggestions but warming up the oven sounds like a good idea.  However, I would not scrape with a metal instrument only because you might scrape off the lining in your oven.

That's a good point. I was kind of picturing more of a prying motion (but that's totally not what i said...).

  • I dont' know if this helps you - but we get that 'baked on splatter' and I spray it with something to let it soak for a little bit (like Clorox greenworks - not the best because it still has a strong smell) - but then I scrub with a magic eraser and it cleans off pretty well!  Good luck!
  • Thanks! I will give those both a try!
