Occupational therapists please
I have a question for you. I spent the weekend with my younger brother (23) who just finished chemo and radiation for Nasal Cancer. He is having issues with his thinking, and someone mentioned that he should maybe see an OT. He told me that he will spend hours analizing if he should do something, and just ends up sitting on the couch. He analized for 2 hours over if he should do the dishes or not. My questions is, can OT help with his thinking?
Re: Occupational therapists please
First, I'm not an occupational therapist! However, I was a recipient of OT after a car accident causing, among several other injuries, a severe brain injury. I realize this is a much different circumstance than cancer treatment; however, one of my major issues was decision-making and OT definitely played a huge role in aiding my recovery from this particular problem. I certainly recommend it in helping get mentally back on track. A large part of my recovery was independent (as your brother's will most likely be), but we used the therapist's specific recommendations on books, games, etc. to guide us through the independent therapy.
I do have to add that there is NO WAY I would have been able to recover so well or so rapidly without the unbelievable support of my friends and family. I have a feeling your brother will certainly rely on you guys more than you can imagine. But just have to say that it is awesome that you're seeking this info, as I have a feeling your brother also has a terrific support system. Well done already, and good luck in the future, Krissimarie!
(My presense on the Nest is somewhat sporadic, but please feel free to page/ IM me anytime!)
Thanks for the info. I should add that the radiation was concentrated on the frontal area of the brain/nasal cavity.
