Tell me about the Sacramento area

Hi ladies!  DC nestie here.  My husband recently took a job with a company that's based in Rocklin, CA.  Right now, he's working remotely, but we're trying to leave the DC area and we'd consider Sacramento if it sounds like a place we would like.  Neither of us have ever been to Sacramento before (Walnut Creek is the closest we've been), so I'm wondering what the city is like in terms of climate, housing, culture, etc.  I consider myself an east coast girl, but California is intriguing.  I'd love to hear your opinions.  Thanks!

PS  Hope this is the right board!  This sounded like the most appropriate option.

Re: Tell me about the Sacramento area

  • Welcome!  We moved to the Sac area in May, after my H took a job at a company in Rocklin.  Smile  We were previously in the midwest.

I was born/raised in OH and I've spent some time in the DC area, so I'm familiar with and love wintry weather.  IMHO, Sac/Rocklin and the foothills here are the best of both worlds.  You're about an hour from snow, but you don't have to deal with it daily.  The summer this year was hot, but it really wasn't bad.  In fact, I'm pretty sure my parents in OH had a worse summer than we did.  I guess now we're getting into the cooler/rainy-er season, and I'm looking forward to that too.

Honestly, I can't find any reason NOT to live here.  The weather is awesome, the people are pretty nice, there's a good mix of cultural stuff to do, and if you're outdoorsy (or would like to be), it's ideal.  We love it here.  Big Smile

ETA - I think I covered everything.  If you have any questions, though, I'd be happy to help.  We spent a goodly amount of time doing research before we moved.

  • This is great info- thanks!  One thing I love about the DC area is the variety of restaurants, stores, and cultural activities.  There are so many great independent businesses (especially restaurants) in this area.  Would you say that the Sacramento area has a lot of variety in stores, restaurants, etc.?

Also, do you know anything about downtown Sacramento?  Does it have a "city" feel?  Thanks again!

  • We've been to downtown Sac exactly twice, so take this with a grain of salt.  It seems to have a city feel, in my opinion.  There are some really great restaurants - a lot of independents and small local chains.  I can't say how Sacramento as a city does in way of stores - hopefully someone else can chime in who is more familiar with downtown.  I know we have a lot of independent shops up our way, but we're about 45 minutes from the city proper, depending on traffic.

One thing you will want to keep in mind is that the light rail system does not go all the way to Rocklin.  So if you were thinking about using public transport for the commute, it could be tedious.  Also, if you want to live in the city proper, traffic between downtown and the Roseville/Rocklin area can be a real beast.  It's usually better eastbound than westbound, and lately it seems to have improved (they finished a road construction project) but it can still be pretty bad, especially on Friday and Sunday (due to Bay-Tahoe traffic).

  • Lived here all my life. Grew up in Roseville (one town over from Rocklin) and DH and I bought a house in lincoln last year.  I went to college in NYC so very familiar with east coast weather and culture.

I agree with PP. I love being only an hour from the snow, great camping, Lake Tahoe and Napa.  I feel like Sacramento has a lot to offer with its proximity to a lot of great things.

I don't spend too much time in downtown Sacramento. But on the few occasion I have gone I have always found great food!!!! Lots to choose from. You can get anything from hole in the wall family owned restaurants to white table cloth fine dining.  It's a great mix I think.

  • Hi there! I'll let the Sac ladies respond -- they know better than me about their town. I was just going to suggest you also post on the Norcal Bump page. There are a lot of Sac girl there.
