Is it ok to register with two different staffing agencies?

Is it ok to register with two different staffing agencies?

Today I met with two different staffing agencies. Both contacted me last week with full time positions they would like to put me up for. They also asked if I would be willing to work temp positions. I told them both that I would, after March. I filled out an online profile with both of them and said that they could both submit me for the positions.

Are there any penalties I would face if they both score me an interview and I am offered a position? I'm asking because my mom says that if they both get me a job, I may have to pay the recruiter a commission if I turn down one of the positions. She says that how it was in the 70s but even if it was, I don't think that's how it is now. Should I only work with one?

  • I'd think that unless you sign an exclusive contract that states you're only going to be with one agency, you're in the clear.  I've never had a problem with being with multiple agencies, and the fact is, if you don't take a position with an agency there are a number of people waiting behind you to take it.  The recruiter won't lose the commission if you wind up having to turn down something.

  • The only advice I would add is to make sure that each are contacting you before submitting your resume for a position. Many companies use more than one head-hunting firm and you don't want your resume appearing on the hiring manager's desk more than once.

  • I've never heard of that before. Yes, you can register with more than one staffing agency and you don't have to accept any job offer.

  • Thank you all for proving, once again, that my mother is crazy!
  • It's smart to apply with different agencies HOWEVER make sure that you're keeping track of where they send your resume.  Do not let them send it out without clearing it with you--it looks very bad for the candidate to apply for one job multiple times because she had no idea where her resume was being sent.  Stay on top of them.
