anyone know anything about ponds??

Ok so this is a very random post but hopefully someone will have a suggestion.

My husband and I are currently renting a house that used to have a pond in the back yard. Everything from the pond is there except for some kind of pump. So basicly it is a hole in the ground which is lined nicely and held into place by very large stones. The problem is that since there is no pump or filter it only fills up with water and leaves and the water is completely still and gross!! This past summer it was a haven for mosquitos and it is a constant battle trying to get our dogs not to drink the gross water in it! AND it stinks!!! We have tried to drain it but since it is at a low part in the yard it is very difficult to do and then it just fills back up whenever it rains.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I have looked online and pumps look like they are around 100-250 dollars, which honestly is more than I want to pay to increase the value of a backyard that is not even ours! We have repeatedly asked the management company for permission to fill it in but they either do not return our calls or else say that they can't get a hold of the landowner.

So does anyone have any suggestions of a cheap fix for this (Like know a cheap kind of filter we can get) or know if we do fill it in if the landlord can get mad and charge us for altering their property? And if they do try to charge us can we argue that it technically was a nuisance because of all of the mosquitoes?

Thanks!!

  • How big is the pond?

  • You can buy a product that is called mosquito dunks that goes in a pond and keeps mosquito larvae from hatching so it helps the mosquito problem. They are safe for wildlife too. Have you thought about covering it with a tarp?

  • We could try to mosquito dunks, although the problem now is more the smell and the general grossness than the mosquitoes since it has started to get colder.... but I will give it a try...

Also in requards to the size it is fairly round with a diameter of about 6 feet. It is mostly about 1-1.5 feet deep with one spot that is about 3 feet deep. Our main concern with a tarp is our two 60 pound dogs falling through. Our yard is not super big so it takes up about 20% of the yard.

Good ideas guys! Thank you! Keep them coming!

  • Maybe you could buy/build a panel of some sort, like a fence panel, and lay it down and put the tarp over the top? To keep out water and dogs? Not sure whether it's too big for that. If the landlord didn't address it, I'd just move.

  • I just replaced my pump this year for my water fountain/river.  Not sure how big your pond is, but you can find some reasonable prices at online stores or eBay.  I found mine online at some shop in Florida that priced matched the lowest price I could find including a Buy It Now offer on eBay.  I think it was ponds123 or something.

The pump is the key to keeping the water circulating and keeping mosquitoes from camping out.  You will also need to skim it for leaves/debris and add some pondfix/algae type cleaner on a regular basis that is animal friendly.  I haven't ever noticed a smell in mine.  I think you experienced that due to stagnant water.

We use a small submersable pump to empty out our water feature.  Usually done in spring before we start it up after all the snow melt/rain as collected in there and then in fall when we know the temp going to stay at freezing or below consistently.

     Hope that helps!
