Pet foster ladies

If you foster pets (or did in the past), which rescue do you work with and would you recommend it? How did they assign foster animals to the foster homes? Were resident dog personalities taken into consideration? How involved are you in finding an adoptive home? What kind of support did they offer during the foster placement? If you don't want to post here, you can pm me or email me. jennyk213 @ yahoo.com.

Our first foster was adopted about a month ago and we want to do it again but with a different rescue. We weren't happy with how certain things were handled and some of their adoption policies.

Re: Pet foster ladies

  • I work with a breed specific (dog) rescue so I don't know if you are interested in that type or not. If you are just PM me and I can give you lots of information. You're probably looking for a rescue that isn't breed-specific though so that's why I'm checking first. Smile Good luck with your search!

  • Pet Project Rescue!!!

I honestly can't say enough good things about them. They pull from MACC (several of our fosters have been within 30 minutes - 1 hour of their euthanasia) plus they work with MNSNAP to get feral and stray cats of Minneapolis speutered. They also work with native american reservations to pull dogs where they don't have an animal control. They've been doing so many education programs lately, it's been amazing.

They send out a "foster plea" when they need fosters - you are in control of picking which dog you would like to foster. You give them the traits that work with your house and if they happen upon a dog, they will pull it or take it in for you to foster.

  • And they have regular adoption events.

That was my big concern with fostering - I wanted a rescue that would have regular adoption events where the foster animals are required to be there (if you are unable, they will work with you to get the animal there and back to you!) to be able to get face time with potential adopters instead of "making appointments" to see the animals. That was a PITA with a different rescue that we fostered for.

  • Although we have never fostered, we have been working on adopting a dog and I have to say that from an adopter's perspective, there are some rescues that have definitely stood out. We LOVE LOVE LOVE RAGOM!! They seem to have the funds to take really good care of the dogs in their care, and have a pretty extensive volunteer network. We also were very impressed by MNPAWS.org, they are new, and started by a local vet.

And like PP, we think Pet Project Rescue is great too.

And I want to say, good for you for fostering again!

  • I know mrsdawnmarie fostered with Homeward Bound, and I think she liked that experience. You could try to send her a message, but she hasn't been around much lately.

We were looking into fostering in the past (before my work schedule changed and Andy started grad school), and I was a bit hesitant about some of the Homeward Bound foster policies listed on their website. I don't want to make it sound like it's a bad organization, because it's not. My parents have adopted from them. I just didn't think fostering for them would work well for us. For example, you have to bring the dog to adoption days every weekend, and if you miss more than one adoption day in a month, they consider the dog adopted by its foster family. That seemed a little strict for me. It just wasn't going to work for us with our weekend job schedules. There are a lot of rescues that only do adoption days every-other weekend, so that's something to consider. Also, HB is based in Monticello, so if your foster dog needs vet care, you have to take it to their approved vet in Becker, which isn't always convenient, depending on where in the Twin Cities you live. For me, getting to Becker is quite a drive. Again, it's not a bad rescue my any means, they just had foster policies that weren't ideal for us.

Another option - I've heard really good things about Pet Haven, I haven't fostered with them but I have a co-worker who has, and she thinks it's a really well-run organization. Just another option to check into.

  • You know my story but I just had to pipe in and say did your foster go to the home you were telling me about?  Were you comfortable with it in the end?

  • Thanks everyone!

Yeah, something like Homeward Bound would be tough. I don't mind spending a every other Saturday at an adoption event but 3 out of 4 is a little tough for us, especially in the summer. And I just googled where Becker is....it's over an hour one way! Yikes.

SillyStraw- I'm going to PM you.

I'm here. I've been MIA cause of crap in real life.

the adoption events aren't in Becker. Maplewood, Maple Grove, Fridley and Burnsville are the ones where I had to go to, and I think one in W. St. Paul.

We had complete control over which dogs we fostered, and I would fully recommend them. Feel free to PM or email me if you have an other questions.

Regardless of which rescue you use, you're making a wonderful decision to foster again.
