Jo

Did they ever find a reason for you being unable to BF Marshall?   I was wondering because using Domperidone is doing WONDERS for my supply (though I'm still supplementing some with formula), and I was wondering if it was something you knew about.

Re: Jo

  • No, but I never really talked to anybody about it.  I am planning to take a breastfeeding class and I will tell them about all my issues and see if they have any insight.

I really think it was just a combination of a number of things.  1) I had a long labor, which can delay your milk coming in. 2) I had a REALLY heavy epidural, which can delay your milk coming in. 3) And I had a c-section, which can delay your milk coming in.

I think that if I had kept at it there is a chance that my milk had come in, but he was such a big baby and eating so much that there wasn't an end to the constant pumping/nursing cycle in sight.  But who knows, I quit trying to breastfeed 10 days after Marshall was born and my milk still hadn't come in.

  • If you don't mind some unsolicited advice.....if at 1 week your milk isn't in, ask for a blood test of your prolactin levels.  If they are below what they should be, talk to your Dr about Domperidone.  It is not FDA approved, but 100% safe and even preferred by the AAP over Reglan (http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/domperidone.shtml).  It is available for purchase from a pharmacy in New Zealand that is great (good customer service, I always get is within their estimated shipping window, which is 14 days) As long as your Dr and/or LC have experience with it (can help you with dosing), it really is a wonder pill!

I truly hope you don't need any of that advice though.

I also really hope I don't need to know that advice...but it is great info to have.  Thanks for letting me know.

And I wanted to say that I'm so glad that you have been able to keep going with breastfeeding, even if you are still having to supplement some.
