Question: Spelling

Ok, so I was discussing this last night, and now I don't know what to do. We have a name picked out for baby if it's a girl or boy. The one I'm stuck on is the spelling for the girls name.

Taylina - this is my favorite.

Teylina - possible option because that's the way I found it in the book I read it in.

or like someone else suggested

Teylena

I'm just curious what you ladies think, because I think regardless of how we spell the name it is going to get misspelled. Kinda like my name, Alise, Elise, Alyse, Elyse, Alice... lol Smile

We choose this name because we want to name LO after family, and our Gma's have impossible names to work with in the English language thanks to them being dutch. Teuni, and Teuntje. So this is the closest we were going to get.

  • What about Taylena?

  • I like it better 'Tey-' than 'Tay-'.  But I think that things with 'ay' in them down here are very over-exaggerated and countrified.  You might not have that problem, though.

  • Tara, that would be possible to. I don't know why, but for some reason I like the "I" in there... but like I said I just wanted to get second opinions.. we still have a while to decide.

John was leaning towards the Tey because he would automatically spell it that way.

  • I still say Taylena if you're going for making it look like it sounds. Teylina looks nice though :)

  • I agree with Tara. If you're going for a name that sounds like tay-lean-a I would spell it "Taylena" or "Teylena".

When I saw Taylina and Teylina I read it more as Tay-lin-a...

  • I like the spellings with Tay- more. And I actually immediately pronounced the ones ending in -ina like I would pronounce Kristina. Although I think I like the look of Taylena better than Taylina.

  • Just name her Lena Wink

    I like the Tey though

  • Here's what I think:

As someone with a unique spelling of their name (it's a love hate relationship), If you don't spell it phonetically, people will never spell nor pronounce it correctly the majority of the time. .

I like the name, but I would spell it Taylena. :)

  • I like it as Teylina or Taylena. I have no idea why, but those suggestions jumped out at me :)

  • From a teacher's perspective, if you are going to give your child an unusual name make sure you spell it phonetically correct. A child's name is the first and most important word they will learn to read and write and it needs to be manageable for them and their friends to read/write. Also, it isn't fair for them to always be correcting pronunciation.

I do think it is a very pretty name. It is uncommon without being weird.

So Maria, how would you spell it?

I agree with John on the Tey and I think lena is the most foolproof.

  • Pretty name. I agree with PP that since it's so unique the best option would be to pick the most common-sense phonetically spelling.
