Application Questions

I've been a SAHM off and on for several years now.  I'm currently filling out an online application at my local college for a position in my field.  I left my last job because I had a baby and decided to go back to being a SAHM.  In the box where it asks me "reason for leaving" what should I put?  I typed out "had a baby" and then changed it to "decided to become a stay-at-home mother" and none of them seemed like the right thing to put.  Could anyone help?

  • Hi there, I'm new to this but I wanted to reply to your post because I just had this same conversation with my current employer who has been in HR for 20+ years. I do not have kids, but she told me when I do have kids never ever mention them on an application or an interview. Your employer is legally not allowed to ask you about your family/kids. She told me that at some point in your life you will be denied a job because you have kids at home. Its not fair, but for some reason employers think that you are a weaker person because of this or that you wont be willing to work overtime due to kids at home etc.. They will make up their own reasons why you wont be as good of an employee because of your kids. This is not my opinion, its just what my current employer told me.

So with that said, I would put "personal" in that blank and just leave it like that.

Hope this helps! I am a newbie here so I hope you don't take my advice as offensive or anything, just sharing what I learned.
