Help me decide - Where would you go?

DH is taking me on a trip for UP TO 5 days as a graduation present in May/June.

I want to go somewhere tropical, and my immediate thought was hawaii, but we have been to Maui multiple times and while I love it I want something else.  I looked at the other islands but I dunno...Oahu seems way too commercial and Kawaii seems too quiet.

Airing on the side of less expensive since we are saving our pennies to pay for my masters program and when I grad from that we plan to take EJ to the UK for a couple weeks.  So this trip is short and more of a relaxation based trip.

It will just be DH and me, no EJ.  We will have passports, I have looked at the carribean but don't know where would be fun, where would you go?

No cruises. No Mexico. Air fare should cost $1500 or less for both of us and hotel should be $300 or less a night (unless all-inclusive, then we are more open to slightly more).

Thoughts?

Re: Help me decide - Where would you go?

  • Have you looked into Costa Rica?  I spent a summer there during college studying the region and the rainforests.  There are some awesome and relaxing places!
  • Aruba

    Turks & Caicos

    Puerto Rico

all three of those come to mind. I have no advice as I have never been to any of those places! HA!

  • I spent some time in St. Kitts and Nevis.  Beautiful destination.  I'm guessing the prices for airfare and hotels would generally fall within your guidelines.

The Nevis hotel of choice is the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, although their prices seemed to vary wildly.

My choice for St. Kitts would be Ottleys Plantation Inn, which is around $300 a night.

  • No suggestions. Just pure jealousy! Good luck!

  • Too many options to list. It depends on what you actually want to do on your vacation. There are tons of islands in the Caribbean that meet your hotel/airfare requirement, but the daily expenses could be very high (ie. Turks and Caicos is insanely overpriced for food/drinks).

I wouldn't go any further than Hawaii, Mexico, some parts of south america, or the Caribbean for 5 days if that includes travel time since you'll waste too much time traveling.

  • I haven't been anywhere tropical myself but what about Belize? It's supposed to be beautiful and it's not as far as S. America. I'm not sure how expensive it is since I know it's become a rather popular tourist destination.
  • I just got back from Costa Rica and would highly recommend it.  We spent a few nights at Hilton Papagayo (all inclusive) and then headed to the volcano for better zipling and such.  I definitly could have spent the whole time at the coast just relaxing.  Our room was $330 a night and that was for one of the nicest rooms in the resort.  The beaches/ocean in general are not as nice a Hawaii, but the pools are great.

  • Is San Diego too close to home? We spent part of our honeymoon at the Pacific Terrace Hotel in SD. It was fabulous. Right on the beach, with walking path/boardwalk and lots of restaurants nearby. Felt like a resort. We literally parked the car and didn't move it for days at a time. Pool, hot tub, free wine, etc. I think it's right around $300 a night (cheaper airfare though I bet, if you fly at all).
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • How about the Big Island?

I would also suggest looking at Costco.com.  They typically have some great deals.

I was just going to rec Belize!  I went with a few girlfriends after college and it was amazing.  Our trip was a STEAL...$700 a person for a week including airfare and hot breakfast every morning.  We booked it through Orbitz.  I'm happy to answer more questions if you like!

  • We are looking at Belize and CR now too. =)  Wooohooo.

SD is 100% off the table.  A large portion of my family lives there and while I love them, I do not want to go visit.  It would be an insult to not stay with them if we went there and I go there far too often.  We will be there in December anyway.  We also want to get the heck out of dodge.  I want a big deal vacation chopped into a couple days...Tropics is right up out alley.

    I am getting super excited!

Thow any more suggestions my way and I promise to listen.  I also will take hotel suggestions too!!!

  • Another vote for Belize. We honeymooned on Ambergris Caye. AMAZING. A lot to do, and if you dint want stuff to do, that's ok too. We stayed at a small resort called Victoria house.

We stayed on Ambergris Caye as well at Banana Beach resort and it's right next to the Victoria House (which is beautiful!).  It was nice and the staff was very friendly and helpful.  It seemed that each resort had their own activities person where you could book snorkeling, zip lining, tours of the Mayan ruins, etc.  We did a snorkel trip, a zip lining trip and then, my absolute favorite was a trip that took us tubing down the river.  Sooo cool because the river actually runs through caves so you float down the river with a headlamp and get to see the insides of all these caves.

One thing I would recommend if you're going to be staying away from the mainland is to book the short airplane ride from the mainland to the islands.  We took the boat and it takes over an hour to get there by boat.

  • Oh and I forgot, we went to Maruba Resort Jungle Spa as well for a day and it was beautiful also.  They actually filmed parts of the very first Temptation Island there.  It's not on one of the islands though so there's not beach access like the other resorts.
