obgyn and hospitals - center city

So not pregnant, but I need to find an obgyn and a hospital to deliver at (hypothetically, if I was KU).  All of my doctors are at Drexel, but I had to get x-rays there today and I was reminded of how sucky Hahnehman is as a hospital.  My primary care doctor is an internist, so she does my lady exams but now that we are going to TTC, it's about time that I found an ob.

Any suggestions from the city ladies?  I'd probably like to stay in CC, unless I should be convinced otherwise.

TIA!

Re: obgyn and hospitals - center city

  • I delivered both kids at Jefferson and had a great experience both times.  I love love love the practice, Women's Medical Specialties at 9th & Chestnut.  Dr. Abigail Wolf ended up delivering both my kids, and she is considered the best doc in the practice, but honestly I would have been happy with any of them, I really liked all the docs.

IMO it is the nurses that really determine your L&D experience and both times they were all great.  Unless there are problems the doc is only there when you are about to deliver

It is a teaching hospital so the parade of residents can get annoying.  The lactation consultants were SO helpful.  I never took a BFing class or anything but was able to BF both kids successfully

We strongly considered staying with Jeff for the next time.  But we moved about 5 minutes from Lankenau, which is a great hospital.  So it seemed crazy to not go there.

  • I go to PennCare OB/GYN at 8th and Spruce.  I started seeing Dr. Elias, who wound up leaving the practice halfway through my pregnancy.  She was great and I was distraught.  When she left, I switched to Dr. Mellen at the same practice and he is fantastic.  I always thought I was most comfortable with a female gyn, but I can not say enough postive things about Dr. Mellen.

I delivered at Pennsylvania hopsital and my experience was good.  The one thing about Pennsylvania hospital is that your doctor doesn't deliver your baby, the hospital has laborists for delivery.  Turns out, a midwife actually delivered my daughter, and both she and my nurse were very good.  I wound up going really quickly, no time for an epidural, and the midwife was really good at helping me through it.  All but one of the nurses in the postpartum unit were really good and very helfpful to a first time mom.

  • I am not KU either, but I saw Dr. Paige for the first time this past spring at the PennCare practice at 8th & Spruce.  I really liked her a lot.  I have also heard good things about the other doctors in the practice and good things about delivering at PA Hospital.

  • I go to PennCare for Women in the Curtis Center. I see Dr. Borromeo but I've seen other doctors there too. They're all pretty good, and the office is nice and recently renovated.

I also delivered at Pennsy and was really happy with it. We had some unexpected issues with DS b/c he arrived early, and he was in the NICU. Hopefully you won't need the NICU, but it is a level III which is the highest level you can get. If we weren't at Pennsy, he would have been transferred to another hospital. Even though we moved to the 'burbs, I'm planning to deliver the next baby there someday. The doctors are from CHOP...I could go on and on about how wonderful they are. :)

  • Dr. Mellen, Dr. Paige- all the doctors in that practice are wonderful! It's on 8th and Spruce.
  • Ok, the big question of the day is...do you have to pay for TV at Jeff or Penn?  Stick out tongue

And Penn is a teaching hospital too, right?  I'm used to that at Drexel, luckily all of the students are super nice and I've never had a problem. So that I don't mind when it comes down to the two places.

Right now I don't have a preference for any suggested (thank you all -- such great suggestions!) but do any of them specialize in infertility as well?  Just in case because I have PCOS.  My PCP specializes in PCOS, so I don't want to deal with someone that will brush me off and give me the "try for a year" bullcrap.

My friend delivered at HUP and she has PCOS.  She was on fertility drugs.  I can ask her who she went to.

ETA: She saw Dr Danielle Burkland.  http://www.pennmedicine.org/wagform/MainPage.aspx?config=provider&P=PP&ID=5276
