Advice: should I fire my tutor?

So I have been having Spanish lessons a few times a week since May.  I have a tutor who is a graduate student here in Spain (he is 29 getting his PHD in Philosophy), but is originally from Columbia (might explain cultural differences).  He was DH's tutor also.

Since I started lessons he often cancels class at the last minute (usually when I am on my way to class or sitting at the cafe waiting for him) because of random reasons (today-at the hospital because he was sick, wallet lost at the police station, had to apply for his visa and ran late, university class ran late, bus was late, etc) or he tells me he had sent me a text/email about moving class that I never got. There has been more than one instance that he is more than an hour late and then I leave.  Recently, I have decreased my waiting time to 30 minutes then I leave if he doesn't show.

I travel about 45 minutes by bus to get to class, which is 1/2 between my house and his and also close to his university.  I do this because I don't work and have the flexibility to met him half way.

I had mentioned to him last month about "being on-time" and a few months ago sending me a text or calling me if he needs to cancel class within 1 hour of start.

Yesterday he had to cancel class because he was sick (which he did 3 hours prior to class) and he said we would have class today.  Well today I get to the cafe and doesn't show after a 1/2 hour.  So I text him that I was leaving...about 15 minutes later I get a text saying he had been at the hospital (he was sicker than the days before) and had no mobile coverage.

I am kinda at my last straw, but I don't want to come off as an instenstive b*tch since he was sick and all (he was sick when we had class on Tuesday).  Of course this isn't the first time and university is starting next week for him so I expect this is going to get worst.

Should I fire him?

  • I would find a new tutor. There are so many people who are unemployed you wont have trouble finding a new one ASAP. Why dont you try a language school? I think the classes will be more fun and you get to meet new people.

Does he at least prepare fun and interesting classes?

  • Yes. He has wasted a lot of your time and has proven to be unreliable. I'm sure you can find another tutor who respects your time.

With our expat contract we get 100 hours of language lessons each.  I have about 1/2 mine left, it is with a company called Global LT.  Class isn't really anything constructive...we usually do a new topic each day (since the first day we both have been writing in a note pad I purchased) then I have homework that we review the next class.

After my 100 hours run out I would like to do a language school or the like.  I don't know anyone here so that might be a good idea to meet people.  I would also like to take a few culiary classes, but everything offered here seems to be in Spainish and I am not "that" good yet.
