Occupy Philly

First of all, is anyone going? If so, why (not judging, just curious)?

Second, can anyone give me a good explanation of what the goal of these demonstrations is? I haven't seen a good one yet. And are they seriously expecting people to camp out for days or weeks?

Re: Occupy Philly

  • We walked by today just to be a lookyloo.  Lots of people standing around. Some with signs.  Ages teen through like 80, most of them sort of hipstery looking artsy people.  Tons of people with cameras, tons of people taking pictures.

I am also not sure what they are meant to be accomplishing but one gal who was speaking was inviting those who are intending to "move in" to meet at the empty fountain with their tents and gear.

  • I do not plan to attend or witness this. Crowds and me...not so much.

    I gathered this from 6abc.com:

Organizers said Thursday's demonstration is meant to be a stand against corporate greed.  In Philadelphia, protest leaders said those at the gathering may camp there and plan to give out food to the homeless. The event appeared peaceful Thursday morning, with people carrying homemade signs that read "Bail Out Students Not CEOS," "Smash Capitalism," "Listen to Your Granny - we want a peace economy," "People Over Profit," "End Corporate Greed" and other slogans.

I also read that the organizers met with the City yesterday to secure permits for the event and get police coverage. From the article I read, I got the feeling that they are trying to follow the rules to prevent arrests and their mission is to really secure more press attention to the corporate bailout and the hardships faced by poor, working-class, and middle-class Americans more than anything.

  • I heard this info from the Dennis and Judi Show on NJ101.5 yesterday- and I believe them to be accurate most of the time.  Judi read a list of things that the protestors are trying to accomplish.  Among them were:

Forgiveness of all debt for all people (mortgage, loans, etc.)

    Free college educations for everyone

OK and now I'm drawing a blank on the rest...but it really was quite extreme demands, IMO.

  • One of the most important things they're doing is reminding Americans that they have the right to free assembly and that with democracy comes the individual's committment to involvement in government.

Jon Stewart's segment discussing this on 10/5 was excellent.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • There is also some hilarious Tea Party commentary on the protests, by people who seem to have completely forgotten that the Tea Party was an act of sedition, and a crime against the ruling government.
