BWLO: Watermelon

Benjamin is a champ with eating.  In fact, prunes are the only "Stage 1" he has yet to try.  DH and I were wondering about trying watermelon, but can't find info anywhere.  We have one of those mesh baby feeders, or we would just hold it and let him chomp.  He is very good at getting food out of his mouth if there is too much in there.

What do you think?  Is it an allergy risk?  Am I missing an obvious safety hazard?

Re: BWLO: Watermelon

  • I think if you're doing it in a mesh feeder especially you'll be fine.

I don't know of any allergy issues and safety?  if it's in the mesh, it's not like he can get a chunk.

  • Watermelon was one of the first things we let Z have on his own, he even enjoyined the rind........ :-/

I think you're safe, it's mostly water as far as allergy's go and as long as you keep an eye that he doesn't take a big chunk in a one time it will pretty much mush itself up between his gums.

  • I agree with the other ladies - you should be fine. Watermelon breaks up very easily (using teeth OR gums) so I wouldn't worry about any choking.

  • I remember seeing an adorable picture of Sawyer (I think!) chomping down on some frozen watermelon in one of the mesh things. Totally raced over to my registry and added them. I think it's a great idea, especially for teething.
  • We started giving Sawyer chunks of watermelon in the mesh feeder when he was about 7 months old, and he loved it!  He didn't start solids in earnest, though, until he was 6 months, but I don't think there is an allergic risk any higher than other foods with watermelon.  Go for it if you think he's ready!

It does stain, though, and it's very messy.  We usually made sure Sawyer was shirtless when we gave it to him in the mesh feeder.
