What would you make for Grampa?

I have no idea what to make my Grampa for Christmas. I sew, knit, have dabbled in paper crafting, and am willing to give pretty much any craft a shot.

Grampa is in his 80s, likes crossword puzzles, tea, history (was in WWII), has a good sense of humor, loves family time, loves apple pie. It's been a rough year for him and my Gramma because they've both been in and out of the hospital. He lives in CT where they got a ton of snow, but he really shouldn't be going outside in bad weather anyways.

I'm already going to do an ornament with DS's hand print (first great-grandchild and grandchild on both sides) and will be quilling the initial of their last name and framing it, but that's more of a gift for both of them.

I could just get a giftcard for the local food store, but I want to make something that would be meaningful.

TIA!!!

Re: What would you make for Grampa?

  • Not really homemade but you could put together a tea gift set that includes some teas that you know he really likes as well as some he may never have tried (maybe a blooming tea) and inlcude a big book or crossword puzzles.
  • Along with the tea idea, I saw these mugs on pinterest

  • ohhh...those are nice mugs! Thanks for the ideas :-) It's so hard to shop/craft for men!

  • Another idea is one of those no sew fleece blankets - if he has a favorite sports team (I believe you said CT so I hope he is Red Sox and not Yankees!)

Joann sells MBA and NFL fleece so you could do one side Red Sox and one side Patriots (I hope these are his teams!) I thought about doing this for DH and maybe I will!

If not sports, any pattern would be good but he could snuggle under the fleece while he drinks tea and does crosswords!

  • I think my father's favorite gift ever was the mug we made on shutterfly, with a photo of my grandson on it.   He absolutely adored my grandson, and he loved having tea with him every morning.  It gave his day a bright start..it was really sweet.

Other than that, he loved his crossword puzzle books.  And comfy jogging suits.lol

  • At that age, I would go for more of an experience or need than stuff.  Get him some of his favorite tea, and some crossword puzzles.  Does he need a nice warm knit hat?

I would sign him up for this asap as a gift to him:

They pay for veterans to travel to see their WWII memorial in DC.  It's an amazing organization.  I wish my grandfather were still alive to have seen the memorial, he was very proud of his service in WWII, as Im sure your grandfather is.  Maybe you or another family member could go with him, to take video and pics of his experience if he does go.

This is an awesome idea. I second the sentiment that grandparents would rather have experiences than stuff.

Another thing you could do is make a photo album of family pictures (like of his grand parents, parents, childhood, etc.) and when you give it to him, tell him you'd like to interview him about the people and events in the photos and record it for your kids to hear as they get older.

  • All great ideas! Thank you!!

Grampa does live in CT, but is from South Jersey (like me!), so the favorite teams are Phillies and Eagles :-)

Love the idea on the family photo album...just stinks that we're living down in FL now :-(

I picked up 2 crossword puzzle books at the dollar tree. Heading to JoAnn fabrics tomorrow and will be checking out material to make him a blanket. Going to check out shutterfly to make a mug - awesome!

    Thank you!!!
