Landscaping ideas...

Hey all, I haven't posted on here before but I need serious landscaping help. My husband and I have no lawn/landscaping experience whatsoever but want/need to give our yard a face lift. We bought our house about 2 months ago, and live in West Michigan. We have just under a half an acre and the front and especially back yard are mostly shaded. We also have a walkway that leads up to the front porch that could use something other than the ugly marigolds that are growing overabundantly right now...

Since I have no green thumb, nor is gardening really my thing, I'm looking for ideas that are really low maintenance--and inexpensive. Are there any blogs or websites out there that you recommend? Ideally I'm looking for inspiration for yards that have a lot of lawn as opposed to designs that deal with patios and fire pits and that kind of stuff (mainly what comes up when I Google "landscaping ideas"). I'm fine with things looking really simple, I just need inspiration! Thanks in advance!

Re: Landscaping ideas...

  • My neighbor put Bishops Weed on one whole side of her yard that she wanted to be low-maintenance. Now, it will creep into anything else you want to put in a bed, so it can't really be planted with other flowers. But it's a good plant-it-and-leave-it kind of thing. It might get too bushy to put along your walkway though.

Along a pathway, I love Snow in Summer. I'm guessing if it grows here in Wyoming, it will grow anywhere.

Maybe post some pictures? That might help. Good luck!

  • I find the easiest thing is to copy something that works well in my area. If you go to http://www.houzz.com/photos/landscape  or http://www.houzz.com/photos/query/lawn

you can filter by your metro area and then show the picture of what you like to the folks at home depot or your local nursery and ask what is low maintenance. Typically unless you like succulents you'll have to change your pots out at least 2x/year.
