Crocheting a granny square question

I learned to crochet about 20 years ago (and I'm not that old) so needless to say I forgot most of it.  I am reteaching myself.  I managed a owl newborn hat and I'm stuck on a granny square.

here's my misunderstanding.

I start with my ch 4 and sl st and I do fine

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times.

Do I always chain 3, 2 dc or just when I'm starting the new round.

I did well until I started Rnd 3 and I ended up in the middle instead of the corner and my Ch 3 is horizontal instead of vertical.

I will love you for you, not for what you have done or for what you will become

Re: Crocheting a granny square question

  • No.  The ch 3 at the beginning creates your first dc of a 3dc set (basically, you are going around the ring with 3dc and putting 2ch in the "corners.")

    So, you will:

    ch 3, 2dc in ring, ch 2, 3dc in ring, ch 2, 3dc in ring, ch 2, 3dc in ring, ch 2.

    Does that help?

that's what I thought I was supposed to do.  But now I'm stuck.  When I got to Round 3 I was in the middle of the side, not at the edge.  So I chained 3 and did 2 dc in the corner, and my ch3 ended up being horizontal, connecting from the middle gap to the corner gap.  Grr... so frustrating.

  • Are you turning your work at the end of each row?

no my instructions say not to turn.

I went on purlbee and her instructions mention sl st to the corner.  Is this what I'm supposed to be doing?  I don't remember being taught that originally.

  • Hop on youtube and search granny square. I think you need to watch someone do the square. :) Works better for most people. Then deciphering directions alone.

  • Yes.  You are supposed to slip stich from where your previous round ended to the corner before starting the next round.

thanks, i finally tried that last time and it worked.  Now if only I could count.  One corner I ended up with 7 dc and another 4 dc.
